JACKSON COUNTY ACCIDENT KILLS KENTUCKY MAN

We now know the name of the man killed in an accident. It was just after 9:30 Tuesday morning when the Wisconsin State Patrol was requested by Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to respond to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 94 at milepost 128 in the gore area. Upon arrival, it was discovered the lone occupant and driver, a 46-year-old Keith Bonds from Kentucky was deceased. WEATHER STAMPS OUT MAIL DELIVERY

The postal service is stamping out delivery because of the Polar Vortex. Retail operations at local offices will be available, but may be limited. There will be no collection mail pick up from businesses or collection boxes. Additionally, there will be residential or commercial package pick-up services.

EVERS ADDS TO HIS TEAM

Governor Tony Evers is adding two Dane County Supervisors to his team.  Jenni Dye and Jeff Pirtl both stepped down from their county jobs to accept positions with the new administration.  Dye is the governor’s new policy director and Pirtl is the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Children and Families.  A spring general election is scheduled for April 2nd to fill the two supervisors’ seats.

TRIAL UNDERWAY

The trial for a woman accused of letting men sexually assault two children for drugs is underway.  Forty-year-old Michele Mayer is facing six counts relating to child abuse stemming from the nearly decade long incident that allegedly happened at her Eau Claire home.  Opening statements started yesterday and prosecutors say it’ll be a tough case because there isn’t any real physical evidence.  Mayer’s defense says if she was guilty there would be evidence including injury reports.

ALTOONA SUPERINTENDENT INTERVIEWS POSTPONED

The interview sessions for the Altoona School District’s superintendent finalists are postponed.  The interview sessions were supposed to take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week but all of them have been pushed to Friday due to the cold weather.  The sessions will start at 3:40 in the afternoon and last until about 6:15 and members of the community are invited to attend.  The school board plans to offer the job to one of the finalists early next month.

ALTOONA MEET AND GREET

Altoona residents are invited to the city hall this week to meet with the candidates for police chief.  According to the Leader-Telegram, the public session is scheduled from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the city hall community room.  All five candidates will introduce themselves and attendees will be able to submit comment cards about them.  The police and fire commission is expected to offer one of them the job early next month.

MUSTANGS RACE TOWARDS GOAL

Menomonie High School is nearing its fundraising goal for its new sports complex.  The school’s athletic director said at a board meeting yesterday that the project needs about 45-thousand more dollars in community funding before funding will be complete.  Construction bidding won’t start until after the funds are raised, but it’s expected to cost over 250-thousand dollars.

TOO COLD TO SKI!

Mount La Crosse will be closed this week due to the extremely cold weather.  A representative with the ski hill says just a couple weeks ago it was closed because of warm rainy weather but today and tomorrow it will be closed due to subzero temperatures.  She says there’s no magic number for when the hill gets closed but that the decision gets made when considering the safety of employees and skiers.
