POLICE STILL LOOKING FOR PASSENGER IN DOWNTOWN INCIDENT

A person is in custody following reports of someone pointing a gun out the window of a vehicle in Eau Claire.  Police say the incident happened along Third Street Saturday night and they were able to locate the vehicle along Water Street around 10:00 p.m.  An airsoft pistol was recovered from the scene.  The person taken into custody could be charged with disorderly conduct and possession of THC.  A passenger in the vehicle is still wanted by police.

BARN HIT BY LIGHTENING

Lightning is believed to be the cause behind a barn fire in the Township of Eaton.  If you were watching WEAU-TV news this morning, then you likely saw the footage and saw that the barn is a total loss.  The fire started around 11:00 yesterday morning and crews were on the scene for several hours battling the blaze.  The cattle were able to get out of the barn safely.  It was the second lightning-related fire call of the day, as

WORKING THROUGH DNA KIT BACKLOG

A new report says there are a lot fewer DNA kits waiting on shelves at the state crime lab.  The Wisconsin Department of Justice says the number of DNA kits waiting more than 90 days to be tested went from 766 in January to 410 in April.  Back in 2015, there were six-thousand untested kits.  Former Attorney General Brad Schimel eliminated that backlog by last year.

OSSEO MAN HEADED TO PRISON FOR ABUSING SON

An Osseo man is heading to prison for abusing his infant son.  A Trempealeau County judge sentenced Mitchel Feyen to five years in prison for child abuse.  Feyen pleaded no-contest back in April to hitting the little boy so hard that he gave the baby a brain hemorrhage.

A COMMUNITY REMEMBERS

Folks in Lake Hallie are making sure that three fallen Girl Scouts will never be forgotten.  Dozens of people were on hand yesterday to dedicate a new pavilion at the Lake Hallie ball fields.  The pavilion is dedicated to nine-year-old Jayna Kelley and ten-year-old Autumn Helgeson.  They are two of the three scouts killed last year while their troop was picking-up trash along the highway.  Ten-year-old Halee Hickle and her mother Sara Jo Schneider also died in that wreck.

POLITICAL MAP DEBATE RAGES ON

Republicans in Madison are asking a judge to end the challenge to the state’s political map.  Democrats in 2015 sued over the map they said is too politically favorable for Republicans.  But the United States Supreme Court last week said federal courts should not be the ones who decide how political the maps can be.  Lawyers for legislative Republicans filed a motion to dismiss the map challenge on Friday.

WI LAWMAKERS NOT JUST BLOWING SMOKE…

The top Republican in the state Assembly says it’s time to start talking about medical marijuana in Wisconsin.  Assembly Speaker Robin Vos on Friday said he’d like to see lawmakers get serious about medical marijuana in the fall.  Vos and other Republicans brushed-off Governor Tony Evers’ suggestion for a medical marijuana program because they said it was just a step toward legalization.  The top Republican in the state Senate, Scott Fitzgerald, has opposed loosening the state’s marijuana laws for years.

BUDGET COUNTDOWN IS ON

Governor Tony Evers has six days to decide on the state budget.  The budget was sent to Evers on Friday by the top Assembly Republican, starting a six-day countdown until he either signs it, vetoes portions of it, or vetoes the whole thing.  However, the countdown excludes the day the bill was sent and Sundays.  The bill will become law if Evers takes no action by next Friday.  The Republican budget excludes several key priorities to Evers like Medicaid expansion

COAL GOAL AFFECTS WI SUPPLY

The nation’s largest coal producers want to merge two mines which supply a majority of Wisconsin’s coal.  Peabody Coal owns the North Antelope Rochelle mine and Arch Coal owns the Black Thunder mine.  Both of the mines are located in Wyoming and supplied more than half the amount of coal burned last year in Wisconsin.  The coal companies say the merger will allow them to cut costs in order to compete with renewable energy sources.  It’s unclear what affect the merger would

WOMAN PICKED UP 7TH OWI OVER WEEKEND

A Webster woman is facing charges for her seventh OWI offense.   Wisconsin State Police say 39-year-old Shana Corbine was driving south on State Highway 93 at Golf Road in Eau Claire without her headlights on around 3:30 yesterday morning.  Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but Corbine kept driving and turned the wrong way onto Interstate 94 before finally stopping.
