A new boutique is offering free wigs and other comfort items for Eau Claire-area cancer patients.  The boutique is located in HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital and carries hand-knitted scarves and hats, blankets, wigs, and other products designed to make the treatment process for cancer patients more comfortable.  The store is open to all cancer patients, regardless of where they are being treated.

HOW LOW DID WE GO?

The bone-chilling cold continues as clear skies and light wind dropped temperatures to minus 26 degrees in Madison AND NEAR RECORD lows here in our area. This morning’s temperature broke a record set in 1985 of minus 22 degrees.  The temperature will not climb above zero today, but will poke into the upper teens tomorrow before pushing into the mid-40s early next week.

CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS HIT WI SUBWAY RESTAURANTS

Four Subway restaurants in the Wausau area are paying out thousands of dollars in penalties for violating child labor laws.  The restaurants are operated by Shadowlake Enterprises which has agreed to update its scheduling system to control hours for their employees under the age of 16.  The U.S. Department of Labor said this week the four Subways allowed over 50 employees ages 14 and 15 to work more hours than allowed and to operate baking ovens, which are both labor

EMERGENCY SHELTER OPEN IN STETSONVILLE

BITTER COLD HANGS ON

Mail delivery service is still suspended in parts of Wisconsin because of frigid temperatures.  The U.S. Postal Service is continuing its suspension of service out of concern for the safety of its employees.  The areas affected include most of northern, central, and northeast Wisconsin, along with the Madison and Milwaukee areas.  Warming shelters are open across the state to provide a place to stay for those with nowhere else to go.  Some are open only during the day, with workers making referrals to

BREAK DOWNS AND BURST PIPES

Eau Claire roads continue to have slippery spots several days after a snowstorm moved through the area.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has issued a warning saying the dangerous cold in the state can enhance conditions for black ice.  Street crews have been laying sand to help commuters gain traction.  Eau Claire public transit is stopping routes early in the evening.  Buses ran from 5:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. yesterday, with the same schedule continuing today.  The schedule is expected to run
