The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is opening the cover on plans for a $20M renovation and expansion project. HEALTH RANKINGS SHOW EAU CLAIRE HOLDING STEADY

Eau Claire County’s health is being ranked 33rd out of 72 counties in the state.  The county moved up several spots since 2018 according to numbers released yesterday.  The 2019 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps showed several strengths in the county, such as low teen birth rates and a high ratio of primary care providers.  Area cited for improvement included premature deaths, often caused by drug and alcohol addictions.

TREU FACING SEPARATE CHARGES IN RUSK CO.

The man accused of hitting and killing three Chippewa County Girl Scouts and one of their mothers is being tried on separate charges in Rusk County.  Reports show Colton Treu was bound over for trial on four drug charges yesterday afternoon and his case will proceed.  Treu is accused of possessing methamphetamine and marijuana.

RICE LAKE MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES AFTER DOMESTIC CALL

A Rice Lake man is in custody after police say he shot at a woman.  Deputies say they got a call from a woman who said Steve Anderson shot a gun at her several times.  Rice Lake police tracked down Anderson and pulled him over and arrested him without incident.  He’s facing more than five charges related to the incident.

MAN ACCUSED OF CHILD SEX CRIMES

A man is being charged with child sex crimes in Barron County after an undercover investigation.  Reports claim 35-year-old Joshua Studer sought to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex but that girl was actually an undercover police officer.  Studer was arrested and charged with using a computer to facilitate a sex crime, attempted sexual assault of a child, and child enticement. LA CROSSE AREA FACING FLOOD THREAT THIS WEEK

The La Crosse area could see flooding later this week.  According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River should rise with the rising temperatures and cause minor flooding in the region Thursday and into Friday.  The river level could then increase steadily as more snow melts north of the region.

REMINDER TO GET ID AHEAD OF VOTING DAY

If you’ve moved since the last election or are new to the state, time is running out to get a new ID.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation yesterday said people who need a new state-issued ID in order to vote should get one as soon as possible.  Voters will head to the polls April 2nd.

UW SCIENTISTS MAKE CANCER RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH

Two scientists at the University of Wisconsin say they’ve made a breakthrough in figuring out how a normal cell stops protecting against cancer.  UW scientists Richard Anderson and Vincent Cryns this week said a lipid messenger in cells is key to whether a cell will protect against cancer or allow the disease to run rampant.  They say their research opens-up a new field of study in cancer research, and hopefully brings doctors a step closer to finding a cure.

STATEWIDE STATE OF EMERGENCY

A statewide response to flooding is continuing.  Officials say at least 200 people have had to evacuate their homes.  Emergency crews passed out 150-thousand sandbags across the state since flooding began last week.  Governor Evers issued a state of emergency Friday in Madison, as well as at least 18 municipalities.  No injuries have been reported.

GORDY’S TO BECOME FAMILY FARE SUPERMARKETS

SpartanNash is planning to rename Gordy’s Market stores as Family Fare Supermarkets.  The new logo you will see will look like this: The company was the winning bidder on five Gordy’s Market stores on March 6th.  Officials with the company says the stores will be converted to Family Fare Supermarkets in the near future.  The company is taking over stores in Chippewa Falls, Lake Wissota, Barron, Cornell, and Chetek.
