MARATHON CO. OPENS TRAILS

Snowmobile trails are closed in Marathon County.  The Parks and Recreation Department says rain and deteriorating trail conditions forced the closure of the trails in County parks today.  There is snow in the forecast, but freezing drizzle and light freezing rain is also expected over the next couple of days.

BREWERS ROUND THE BASES TO ARIZONA

Uniforms, bats, balls and plenty of sunflower seeds are all packed and heading to the new Milwaukee Brewers training facility in Phoenix.  Trucks were packed up today for the trip to the desert and the fully renovated training facility renamed Brewers Fields of Phoenix.  The facility has undergone a 60-million-dollar renovation.  The ribbon-cutting ceremony is February 12th and pitchers and catchers report on February 13th.

Alternate Side Parking rules go into effect at midnight Wednesday, 2/6/19 and will end at 5 p.m. on 2/8/19. PRAIRIE LAKE CABIN EXPLOSION

No one is injured after an unoccupied cabin on the west side of Prairie Lake exploded over the weekend.  A firefighter with the Cameron Fire Department says the cabin’s owners were on the lake a mile away when the explosion happened.  The cabin is being considered a total loss and the cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

COLFAX MAN HEADED TO PRISON FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT

A Colfax man is going to prison for nine months after being convicted of a 2015 child sexual assault.  A criminal complaint says a young boy told police 52-year-old Joseph Schindler touched him inappropriately over the span of about a month and Schindler allegedly admitted to the touching.  Schindler pleaded no contest to the crime and will also serve six months of probation after his jail sentence.

WOMAN ACCIDENTALLY SHOT IN ANKLE BY HUSBAND

A woman is injured after police say she was accidentally shot in the ankle by her husband.  The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office says 27-year-old Adam Hoff called police to his Ettrick home early Sunday morning saying he accidentally shot his wife, 25-year-old Shayli Hoff.  She was taken to the hospital and Hoff was arrested and charged with handling a firearm while under the influence and bail jumping.

MENOMONIE LOOKS TO ADD STUDENT HOUSING

Two new housing complexes in Menomonie are getting closer to being built.  While flipping through the The Leader-Telegram you may have read reports that the city council voted yesterday to start development on a 53-unit student housing complex on 17th Avenue West and a 96-unit complex on 21st Street.  The city must first agree to rezone the land for multi-family, residential use.  Both building proposals will be taken up by the Planning Commission later this month.

NEW EAU CLAIRE PARK SWINGS FOR FENCES

Eau Claire city officials are eying land near Roosevelt Elementary School for a new park.  The Eau Claire Plan Commission voted yesterday to buy three plots of land south of Folsom Street between Seventh and Bolles Streets.  The city has put a high priority on buying new park space.  The City Council will vote on the purchase next Tuesday.

THIRD LAWSUIT FILED CHALLENGING LAME DUCK LAWS

A group of unions and a Democratic lawmaker are challenging the laws Republicans passed during the lame-duck session.  This marks the third lawsuit filed disputing the bills passed in an overnight session in December.  Five unions and state Senator Janet Bewley filed the suit in Dane County Court yesterday, arguing the new laws illegally weaken the governor and attorney general’s powers and place a financial burden on taxpayers.

DOWNTOWN COULD SEE UPTICK IN SENOR LIVING

Downtown Eau Claire may soon have a new senior living space.  The Eau Claire Plan Commission approved a rezoning plan yesterday to replace three office and two residential buildings across from Wilson Park.  The complex would have 120 apartment units and over four thousand square feet of space for a memory car and fitness facility for residents.  The City Council will vote on the measure next week.
