POLICE CHASE LEADS TO METH CHARGES

Two people are in custody after a police chase in Altoona.  Reports say police tried to pull over a car on River Prairie Drive late Sunday night but it sped up.  The chase took police to a dead-end alley where three suspects left the car on foot.  Police eventually caught Kaylee Berg and Brent Erickson and charged them with obstructing an officer.  Berg is also facing a meth charge.

MAN ACCUSED OF MORE SCAMS

A man suspected of stealing money from people after promising to complete contract work around Eau Claire is facing new accusations.  James Dorsey was originally charged with misdemeanor theft by fraud but new complaints filed yesterday detail him stealing thousands of dollars from another person after he forced them to make down payments for work he never completed.  The original complaint came from a woman who claims Dorsey was supposed to remove snow from her roof for 600 dollars but

OVERDOSES ON RISE

The number of fentanyl-related overdoses is on the rise in west central Wisconsin.  According to the La Crosse County Health Department, there were only five fentanyl overdoses in the county between 2013 and 2016 but that number jumped to 23 between 2017 and the first half 2018.  The Center for Disease Control says the number of fentanyl overdoses across the country rose by more than one-thousand percent between 2011 and 2016.

The flu is still very much in season in Wisconsin.  The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday warned of a second wave, late flu season.  The latest report to the CDC shows a spike in flu cases in Wisconsin this month.  Doctors say it’s still a good idea to get a flu shot, and it’s always a good idea to wash your hands and cover your sneezes out in public.

PATTERSON DUE IN COURT TOMORROW

All eyes in Wisconsin will be on the man accused of kidnapping Jayme Closs and murdering her parents, and whether he will plead guilty.  Jake Patterson is due in a Barron County courtroom tomorrow.  He could enter a plea in the case.  Patterson told a Minneapolis TV reporter that he wants to plead guilty and avoid a trial.  He will have that opportunity tomorrow.

MINNESOTA MAN NETS JAIL TIME

A Minnesota man is heading to jail for two months after police say he thought he was coming to Eau Claire to have sex with an eighth grader.  A judge last week sentenced 34-year-old Garth Calvin to 60 days in county jail.  Police say Clavin thought he was talking to a 14-year-old, but was really talking to an undercover officer.  They arrested him last June when he arrived in Eau Claire.

EVERS NOTES RISING CONCERN FOR FLOOD WATERS

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers say he doesn’t want folks in western Wisconsin to live under a constant threat of flooding.  The governor toured parts of waterlogged Trempealeau County yesterday.  He met with folks in Dodge and Arcadia.  Evers said the goal is to figure out a way to keep flood waters from rolling through town every year or so.

WAITING FOR THE GAVEL TO DROP…

Lawmakers in Madison are waiting for two judges to rule on two questions about the December reforms that were placed on hold last week.  One judge, in Madison, says he’ll rule today on a question about the separation of powers.  The other judge, in an appeal court, could also rule today on whether the entire package of laws are constitutional.  Republican lawmakers yesterday said almost no one wants to do much of anything until the cases are decided.

PACK AND DA’BEARS MEET FOR NFL KICK OFF

Packer fans are not going to want to miss the start of the NFL season.  The league yesterday announced that the Packers and Bears will play the first game of the 100th NFL season this September.  Green Bay and Chicago have met 200 times in those 100 seasons, and the Packers lead the series 97-95-6.

Senator Ron Johnson hopes Attorney General William Barr will finish his final report so Congress can turn its full attention to other challenging issues besides the Mueller [[ MULL – er ]] Report.  On the other side of the aisle, Democrat Tammy Baldwin says special counsel Robert Mueller’s independent investigation did not exonerate President Trump and he wasn’t cleared of wrongdoing.  Baldwin says Barr needs to release the report and the underlying documentation so that Americans can assess the report
