HILLTOPPERS ON LOOKOUT FOR NEIGHBORHOOD BEAR

Police in Glenwood City are telling neighbors to be aware, there could be a dangerous bear in town.  Officers say it looks like a bear attacked a local dog Sunday night.  The dog survived, but with some pretty severe injuries.  The dog’s owner told police he shot the bear at least once.  Glenwood City police and the Department of Natural Resources say they are both looking to find the bear.

SECOND CHANCE FOR FIRST OWI?

Drivers in Wisconsin who don’t drink and drive for six months after their first OWI conviction could get a second chance.  Senator Chris Larson is one of a handful of lawmakers who want to allow first time drunk drivers to voluntarily install an ignition interlock as a way to earn a second chance.  Larson says about 10 percent of drivers in Wisconsin have an OWI conviction, and he hopes his plan will let some of them clear their names.

PARKING STUDY IN DRIVE FOR LA CROSSE

The city of La Crosse is ready to spend 100-thousand-dollars to look at parking.  The city’s Board of Public Works approved the study last night.  La Crosse last studied parking back in 2014, but city leaders say this review will be more comprehensive.  The plan is to take a look at available parking around the city’s hospitals and around the UW La Crosse campus.

TRIBE COULD BE FINED FOR THEFT

Federal regulators want to fine the St. Croix Chippewa tribe five million-dollars because tribal leaders stole about a million-and-a-half dollars.  The National Indian Gaming Commission announced the fine yesterday.  The commission says they are asking for such a large fine because the tribe recently admitted that it’s finances are in terrible shape.  Two tribal elders and a consultant are accused of taking money for years from the tribe’s casino and spending it on themselves.

CONGRESSMAN KIND ON FARMERS LOSS IN CHINA TRADE WAR

Western Wisconsin’s congressman says farmers in Wisconsin and across the country are losing in President Trump’s trade war with China.  Democratic Congressman Ron Kind last week said instead of more tariffs, the president needs to work to bring other trading partners to the table and work with China.  Kind said tariffs only hurt Americans who rely on international trade.  That was before China responded yesterday with a series of tariffs of its own.

WISCONSIN OFFICERS TO BE ADDED TO NATIONAL MEMORIAL

There are a lot of Milwaukee Police officers in Washington D.C. this week.  It’s National Police Week, and officers from the city are in D.C. to remember Officer Charles Irvine Jr. and Officer Michael Michalski.  They both died in the line of duty last year.  They will both have their names added to the national law enforcement memorial.

McDonell Central Catholic High School Senior Charlie Bleskachek signed his letter of intent on today with Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota for the 2019-20 cross country and track seasons.  Activities Director Eric Gardow said, “Charlie exemplifies the hard work it takes to be successful in both academics and athletics. WISCONSINITES LIVING LONGER

A new study released by the Wisconsin Department of Health shows Wisconsin’s older population living longer.  However, there were more deaths in the state overall.  The Badger State had a 14-percent increase in deaths in 2017 compared to the ten years prior.  But the death rate among Wisconsinites over the age of 65 decreased by ten-percent in that decade.  The top three causes of death are heart disease, cancer and unintentional injury, like falls.

SHOOTING AT CLUB SENDS ONE TO HOSPITAL, ONE PERSON IN CUSTODY

One person is hurt and another person is in custody after a shooting at a club in Weston, east of Lake Wausau.  Police say the shooting happened at Big Dan and Space Kelly’s Club just after 12:30 yesterday morning.  The victim’s condition is unknown and it’s unknown what led to the shooting.

STAMP OUT ADDS UP

Mail carriers and volunteers across the Chippewa Valley are doing their part to eliminate hunger.  If you watched the news, you may have seen WQOW report numbers. Early call is that over 80 volunteers spent Saturday picking up non-perishable food items from mailboxes in the area for the 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger day.  All the donations are going to Feed My People and Saint Francis Food Pantry in Eau Claire.  Donations in Chippewa Falls will go to the area
