Alabama passed one of the nation’s strictest abortion bans, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey passed the near-total abortion ban in her state, giving an exception only when the mother’s life is in danger.  However, she noted that because of the Roe v. CLOSS HOMETOWN HERO

Jayme Closs is getting another recognition, this time from the state of Wisconsin.  Closs was at the Capitol in Madison yesterday when lawmakers honored her as a Hometown Hero.  She didn’t speak, and her aunt was the one who accepted the award.  State Rep. Romaine Quinn, who represents Closs’ hometown, said her strength, resolve, and bravery are beyond incredible.

VIGIL HONORS LOCAL TEEN

The family of a 17-year-old from Eau Claire who went missing after jumping into the Chippewa River is hoping for closure.  Panio Hessel’s family say they won’t be able to move forward without finding his body.  Hessel jumped into the river last month, but slipped below the water.  Friends, family members, and the community turned out yesterday for a vigil in his honor.

WATER PLAN ON TAP

County leaders in Chippewa Falls want to get a new water management plan down on paper.  The county board on Tuesday agreed to craft new guidelines after a survey said farming and industry in the county could impact local water supplies.  The hope is to have new rules in place to guide future developments in Chippewa County.

WI BUDGET BOOST

Wisconsin Republicans don’t want to spend any of the new money that the state could see for the next state budget.  The Legislative Fiscal Bureau yesterday said Wisconsin will see a one-time bump of about 750 million-dollars over the next three years.  Governor Evers says he wants to spend that money to pay down some debt and grow a couple of state programs.  Republicans want to put the money away for a rainy day fund, or use the cash to lower taxes.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT KILLS ONE

A motorcycle accident leaves one dead in Menomonie. It happened on Tuesday May 14 just before 10 at night. the Menomonie Police Department and the Menomonie Fire Department responded to a single vehicle motorcycle crash in the 1900 block of Dairyland Road. Upon arrival of the police and fire department personnel it was determined that the operator of the motorcycle was deceased. Preliminary investigation of the accident showed that speed and alcohol were possible factors. The crash remains under investigation

CLARKE COUNTY CRASH KILLS ONE

One person is dead after a head-on crash in Clarke County.  The sheriff’s office says the crash was on Schofield Road in Weston yesterday morning.  One car was seen blocking both lanes and the other was on the shoulder of the road.  One of the drivers was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

CHETEK MAN FACING ASSAULT CHARGES

A Chetek man is accused of assaulting a woman on the side of a road in Barron County.  A criminal complaint claims the woman recently got a ride home from Cazz Johnson and he stopped to go to the bathroom on the side of the road and sexually assaulted her.  The woman says she kicked him out of the truck and drove to get help.  Johnson is facing four felonies and could do up to 60 years in prison.

SCHOOL THREAT NOT CREDIBLE

Eau Claire police are investigating a threatening message written to DeLong Middle School.  School district officials say police found the person responsible for writing the message yesterday and determined there was no credible threat.  School is in session as usual today and it’s unclear what kind of discipline the person responsible will receive.
