ATTEMPTED ESCAPE LEADS TO NEW CHARGES

A western Wisconsin man in jail for a deadly police chase is looking at new charges for trying to escape.  Jailers in St. Croix County say they found some of the metal bars removed from Brandon Lieffring’s jail cell.  His cellmate says Lieffring was plotting an escape.  Lieffring is in jail on charges that he killed a man while running from St. Croix County deputies in early July.

Public health managers in Eau Claire County are warning people to be very careful around bats that cannot fly.  The county’s health department on Friday said it confirmed that a bat found in Altoona tested positive for rabies.  It comes just a couple of weeks after someone found a rabid bat in Eau Claire’s Phoenix Park.  Health department managers say the first sign that something is wrong is when you see bats during the day, the second sign is if

BLOOMER LAKE ASSOCIATION MAKES SPLASH

The hope is Lake Como will not just be better looking, but that the lake will be healthier.  Neighbors with the Bloomer Lake Association picked-up a lake skimmer this month to help clear reeds and plants that grow under the lake’s surface.  The hope is to keep vegetation from snapping boat motors.  But, neighbors say the skimmer will also help the lake look much better.

EVERS TACKLES PFAS CHEMICALS

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is doubling down on his push against PFAS chemicals.  The governor on Friday signed an executive order that will mobilize state government to try and find PFAS pollution and study it.  PFAS chemicals are found in everything from non-stick cookware to firefighting foam.  The governor already ordered local water treatment centers across Wisconsin to screen for PFAS pollution.  His new order takes that further and includes monitoring in fish and other wildlife.

Add Brett Favre to the list of big-name Packers who’ll be in Lambeau Field when the Packers start the 2019 season.  The team yesterday confirmed that Favre will appear at the opening celebration for the Packers when they start their season at home on September 15th.  The Packers will host the Vikings that day.

ACCIDENT SENDS TRACTOR DRIVER TO HOSPITAL

An accident on Saturday afternoon sent one to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It was just before 4:30 when a farm tractor was struck by an automobile as it crossed WIS 72 on 430th St east of Ellsworth. The driver of vehicle, 56-year-old James Phernetton sustained non-life-threatening injuries while the tractor driver, 78-year-old Harvey Dohrer was airlifted to a hospital. The crash is under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

MKE PREPS FOR DNC

The upcoming Democrat Party Convention in Milwaukee is bringing plenty of business to Madison.  Fox47 reported yesterday that Wisconsin Democrat Party Chair Ben Wikler says no state delegate groups will stay in Madison but lots of visitors will use Madison as their stop off point.   The convention is scheduled for July 13-16 next year at Fiserv Forum.  The actual Democrat Party delegates from around the country will be staying in Milwaukee and as far south as Chicago.

WI MAN DIES IN NY ACCIDENT

The death of a Wisconsin man at a New York City high-rise is under investigation.  Authorities say Samuel Waisbren of Fox Point was trying to get out of an elevator yesterday when it malfunctioned.  The 30-year-old was trapped between the elevator car and the shaft and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Waisbren was a graduate of Nicolet High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

KAHL TAKES ON ROBOCALLS

State Attorney General Josh Kaul is joining a bipartisan coalition to stop illegal robocalls.   Kaul says the number of calls must be reduced dramatically.  A coalition of 51 attorneys general and 12 telecommunication companies agreed to adopt eight principles to fight the robocalls.  They include the companies implementing call-blocking technology, monitoring their networks for robocall traffic and developing technology to authenticate that callers are coming from a valid source.
