Communities across the state are preparing for the commemoration of Memorial Day.  Volunteers are placing American flags on thousands of grave markers at Wisconsin’s National cemeteries.  In Wausau, volunteers spent time at Pine Grove Cemetery today lining the main roadway with dozens of flags.  

For the first time in a decade the 2019 deer hunting season will not include any buck-only counties. Those designations help protect the herds so they can thrive.  The herds have increased in size in northwestern and southern areas of the state and today the Natural Resources Board approved guidelines for this year’s deer hunting season without buck-only restrictions.

Republican lawmakers in Madison say they’re ready to spend a half-billion dollars more on public schools in the state.  But, Democrats and Governor Evers’ office say that’s not enough.  The legislature’s budget writing panel, the Joint Finance Committee, will meet today to vote on a school funding package.  Governor Evers pitched a one-point-four-billion-dollar increase for public schools in his budget.  Republican lawmakers say they want to spend 500 million. 

An apartment building in Wausau is damaged after getting hit by a falling tree early this morning.  Reports say the tree fell due to heavy wind gusts at Woodland Chalet Apartments around 3:00 and it caused the building to be evacuated.  No one was hurt. 

Some state lawmakers have an idea to attract more volunteer firefighters and emergency medical service workers.  A tax credit program is being proposed that would help volunteers pay for getting their accreditation and continued education.  One Wisconsin EMS association board member says about 80-percent of the state’s EMS workers are volunteers. 

A baby deer is safe after needing to be rescued from a storm drain in Eau Claire.  Police say someone who lives near Starr and Bellevue Avenue heard the fawn crying Monday night and found it in the drain.  Police were able to remove the deer and send it back into the nearby woods where its mother was waiting. 

Republican lawmakers in Madison can go ahead and vote on plans to defund Planned Parenthood, stop abortions based on gender or birth defects, and write new rules for babies who survive abortions because Governor Tony Evers says he’ll veto them all.  Evers tweeted yesterday that he won’t sign any of the handful of abortion proposals making the rounds at the WisconsinCapitol into law.  The governor says lawmakers shouldn’t force their healthcare decisions on the women of Wisconsin.  In related news, dozens of

A Wheeler couple was arrested for multiple counts of Child Pornography.  Earlier this month, The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at S Hillside Dr in the Village of Wheeler. The sheriff’s office says it found child porn and child underwear while searching Wayne Englin’s house in Wheeler earlier this month.  Englin was arrested after he allegedly admitted to looking at child porn.  He was also charged with repeated sexual assault of a child and other crimes.  His

Lawyers for the young man accused of running down three Girl Scouts in Lake Hallie says there’s no way he can get a fair trial in Chippewa County.  Colten Treu’s lawyers this week asked the judge to move his trial to a different county.  Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell said if they can’t pick an impartial jury in Chippewa Falls, he’d be open to bringing in a jury from somewhere else.  But said he wants to keep the trial
