EC COURTHOUSE SEES SECURITY UPGRADES

There will be added security at the Eau Claire County Courthouse starting next month.  Reports say on July 1st the second floor will have one entrance from the stairs and elevators, new security screening areas, and added security personnel.  Courthouse officials say the reason for the change is to increase safety.

ONE TO PRISON, ONE TO TRIAL

One half of the Dunn County couple charged with child pornography and sexual assault is agreeing to go to prison.  Wayne Englin pleaded guilty yesterday to three charges, he was originally facing 30 different counts.  His wife, Michelle, is headed for trial.  The judge in the case said there’s enough evidence against her for prosecutors to proceed.  She’s due back in court next month. *PHOTO CREDIT: WEAU 13 NEWS

ALL ABOARD! LOCAL AMTRAK GETS PUSH

There’s a new push to get more Amtrak service in western Wisconsin.  The West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition is talking about bringing four trains-per-day to the line between Eau Claire and Minneapolis-St. Paul.  The coalition’s Scott Rogers says it will take a public-private partnership, which means taxpayers will likely have to foot some of the bill.  Rogers says the coalition thinks there’s enough interest in train travel to fill the trains.

MARSHFIELD SCHOOLS LOSE TO SCAM

Marshfield schools are out over 650-thousand-dollars after getting scammed.  The school district yesterday admitted that someone gave banking information to a caller who posed as a vendor.  That then lead to the scammers taking 660-thousand-dollars late last month.  Marshfield Superintendent Ryan Christianson says they are working with the FBI to try and get the money back or find the scammers.  He says the case should be a warning for everyone about privacy and security.

CHECK-IN ADDS UP

Hotel rooms in La Crosse will cost more as the city looks for a way to pay for work at its convention center.  La Crosse’s city council last night approved a point-and-a-half increase to the city’s hotel-motel tax.  Visitors will now pay nine-and-a-half-percent tax each night.  City leaders hope the tax will raise the two-and-a-half-million dollars they need to pay for 42 million-dollars in renovations at the La Crosse Center.

HUSKIES BRING HOME HARDWARE

The Eau Claire North Huskies are bringing home the hardware.  The team won the WIAA Division One state title last night, beating Sun Prairie 5-4.  Sam Stange smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put Eau Claire North ahead for good.  The Huskie last won the state baseball title in 2011.

WI TEACHER RAISES IDEA FOR FLAG DAY

Today is Flag Day.  The idea of setting aside a day to celebrate the American flag was suggested in 1885 by Wisconsin school teacher B.J. TSA TIPS FOR FLYING THROUGH THE TRAVELING PROCESS

Airport officials have some tips for those heading out of Wisconsin for some summertime fun.  The TSA says travelers need to monitor their flight status and arrive at the airport a couple of hours before departure.  Knowing what you can and can’t bring through security is also important to expedite screening.  The TSA emphasizes that people stay hydrated when traveling and says passengers can bring empty water bottles and fill them in the gate area.

TEEN HEADED TO TRIAL FOR MURDER

A Neenah teenager will stand trial for killing his grandparents.  Alexander Kraus waived his preliminary hearing today on charges of murder in the death of Letha and Dennis Kraus.  They were killed in their home in Grand Chute earlier this spring.  A motive has not been disclosed, but authorities allege Kraus confessed to the shootings.

WE HAVE A VERDICT: GUILTY

A New Richmond man is going to prison after being convicted of killing his son.  Kayle Fleischauer was found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide in Saint Croix County court yesterday.  Fleischauer was accused of shooting his son Chase last April after a night of heavy drinking together.  The defense claimed Chase shot himself.  Fleischauer is facing up to 25 years in prison and will be sentenced on August 30th.
