VOTE RESCHEDULED FOR NEW HOUSING UNITS

New housing units could be coming to an area off of North Crossing in Eau Claire.  Reports say a company wants to rezone more than 100 acres of land near the Menards Corporate Center to build townhouses and 20-unit apartment buildings.  The city plan commission postponed a vote for the housing Monday.  The vote is rescheduled for October 14th.

ANOTHER HAT IN THE RING

A third Republican is running for Sean Duffy’s vacant U.S. House seat in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.  Marathon County farmer Michael Opela recently announced his candidacy for the seat, saying Congress needs fresh ideas and a fresh look.  Opela joins veteran Jason Church and State Senator Tom Tiffany in the race.  Duffy resigned from congress last week for family reasons.

CLEAN UP CONTINUES, CHECK IN SPOT FOR LOST ITEMS

The Town of Wheaton is continuing to recover after an EF-3 tornado hit Chippewa County last Tuesday.  There is still debris and fallen trees from the tornado a week later.  Area fire departments are seeking more volunteers to continue cleanup efforts.  The Town of Wheaton Fire Station is acting as a check-in spot for volunteers, and also has food and water donations and 400 lost items that have been turned in during the aftermath. WARM UP WASHINGTON

The vacant Eleva Intermediate School building is being replaced.  It was announced yesterday that it will be torn down to make way for a Dollar General.  Eleva Intermediate School was closed in 2016 due to building problems.  The property was recently sold to the developers for Dollar General for 125-thousand dollars.

DEER STAND VANDALISM IN DUNN CO.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s office is looking for information on deer stand vandalism.  Officials say the stands found vandalized had graffiti that said “ALF,” which could stand for Animal Liberation Front.  They also remind deer hunters to check stands before using them during deer hunting season.  Anyone with information on the vandalism can contact Dunn County authorities.

PUNCHING INTO EMPLOYEE SHORTAGE

Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development is making efforts to address an employee shortage.  Secretary Caleb Frostman has been traveling the state to talk to private employers about their recruitment strategies.  He visited Eau Claire recently as part of the Workforce Development Month tour.  Frostman says a round-table discussion will be held to share the information he’s learned from area businesses.

RED AND WHITE WON’T PLAY GOLDEN STATE

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez says he won’t schedule the Badgers to play teams from California.  A new law signed into effect today will allow California’s college athletes to make money several ways including endorsements.  In a radio interview today Alvarez said athletes who get paid aren’t amateurs.  California’s governor believes other states will introduce similar legislation.  The new law takes effect in 2023.

A bright autumnal sun shone down on the starting line of Stepping Stones’ 3 rd annual Step Up To Hunger 5K Walk/Run. On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Red Cedar Trail in Menomonie was the scene as supporters of all ages and sizes gathered to “Step Up” to prevent hunger in the community. Each registrant received a swag bag filled with goodies donated by area businesses, and the race was followed by a chili feed at the nearby Riverside Park shelter.
