MAN ACCUSED OF MURDER HEADED BACK TO DOC

The man charged with a killing in Rusk County from 2018 will once again see a doctor to see if he is fit enough to stand trial. A judge in Ladysmith this week ordered a psychiatric evaluation for Preston Kraft. There have been questions about his mental health since his arrest in November of 2018. Police say Kraft killed Robert Pettit in May of 2018.

The real police in Eau Claire are not sure what some fake police officers want. Eau Claire Police are warning people after getting reports that scammers are calling people and pretending to be with the police department. One person got a call threatening to arrest them, while the other got a call that they were a victim of the crime. The real police say if you get a call, hang-up.

LOCAL FLU NUMBERS LOWER THAN LAST YEAR

With all of the focus on the coronavirus, it is easy to forget that it is still flu season in Wisconsin. Hospitals in Eau Claire say they’ve seen 23 people hospitalized with the flu so far this season. The Eau Claire City-County Health Department says that’s compared to 58 cases last year. Public Health nurse Allison Gosbin says most of the flu cases up till now have been Influenza B. She said doctors are starting to see Influenza A cases pop-up.

LAWMAKERS MOOOOVE FORWARD WITH TRADE LEGISLATION

Dairy farmers and cheese makers in Wisconsin are thrilled that the new trade deal with Canada and Mexico is almost final. President Trump signed the USMCA yesterday. Wisconsin’s Dairy Business Association says the new deal will open-up markets for Wisconsin milk and cheese and could help farmers who’ve been struggling for years. Leaders in Canada need to ratify the agreement for it to be final.

UW MADISON SUSPENDS TRIPS TO CHINA

The University of Wisconsin’s biggest campus is ending trips to China, for now. The campus in Madison yesterday suspended university-sponsored trips to China because of fears of the coronavirus. The suspension covers undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in all programs. A university official says the school is following the recommendations from the CDC.

LAWMAKERS MAKE SPLASH WITH BOAT LICENSE

People in Wisconsin may soon need a license to drive a boat. Lawmakers on Tuesday listened to a plan to change the law for young boaters. Right now some kids as young as 10-years-old can drive a boat without any training, but older teens cannot. One of Wisconsin’s largest power companies is telling people not to stick pennies in their electrical outlets. WE Energies yesterday warned against the #OutletChallenge. It’s the latest internet-idea that has young people sticking pennies in between a plug and their outlets. When they plug the plug into the wall, sparks shoot-out. WE Energies says that’s extremely dangerous. The utility says it could damage the wiring and/or start a fire.

WI PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY BALLOTS SET

The Wisconsin presidential primary ballot is now set.  The bipartisan election committee announced today there are 12 Democratic candidates on the April ballot including latecomer Michael Bloomberg.  President Trump is the only candidate listed on the Republican side.  Wisconsin played a key role in the 2016 election of President Trump and figures to be a critical state in November’s election.

Police agencies across Wisconsin are warning drivers about drinking and driving over Super Bowl weekend.  Hundreds of parties are planned for Sunday’s kickoff between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.  Authorities are recommending adding a designated driver to the celebration game plan because troopers and local officers will be out in force to keep roads safe.
