LID OFF CANNERY DISTRICT PLANS

The development plan for the Cannery District in downtown Eau Claire is approved.  The city council approved the plan last night.  The district will include a three-story urban housing development that will be built by the summer of 2021.  The city says some new jobs will come to the area during construction.

DOG KENNEL PLANS ANIMAL TESTING

Two Sauk County residents are planning to breed dogs for medical research.  A county committee approved a conditional use permit last night so Jill and Clinton Kane can operate the kennel.  The Kanes were originally denied a permit for the business last month but that decision was overturned unanimously last night.  The Kanes must follow guidelines from the Land Resources and Environmental Committee to keep their permit.

LACROSSE SAYS GOODBYE

Former La Crosse Police Chief Ron Tischer is officially off the job.  Yesterday was Tischer’s last day as chief and he received recognition from the city including a key to the city.  Tischer served seven years as chief.  He’s moving to Payson, Arizona to become the police chief there at the end of the month.

CAUSE OF WATER ST. EXPLOSION STILL UNKNOWN

Firefighters are not saying what blew-up in the kitchen at Gyro King on Water Street, but they say the explosion injured one person.  It happened yesterday afternoon.  Firefighters say they smelled gas afterward, so they evacuated nearby businesses and closed Water Street for a few hours.  Investigators say they’re still trying to figure out what caused the explosion.

ST.CROIX CO MAN ASKS FOR NEW TRIAL

A St. Croix County man is asking for a new trial after his reckless homicide conviction.  A jury found Kayle Fleischauer guilty in June of killing his 19-year-old son last year.  Police say Fleischauer was drunk at the time.  He claimed his son accidentally shot himself. The judge in the case heard arguments for a new trial yesterday, there’s no word when a ruling will come.

EC LOOKS TO SPEND MONEY TO BE AFFORDABLE

The city of Eau Claire is ready to spend almost three-quarters-of-a-million-dollars to help some folks find an affordable place to stay.  The city council last night approved a 700-thousand-dollar request to invest in affordable housing.  Two hundred-thousand of that will stay with the city, but the other half million is being earmarked for projects in the community.  Council member Andrew Werthmann says developers may be able to ask the city for part of the money as a loan, or the

WI SEES A SELLERS MARKET

It’s a seller’s market in Wisconsin right now.  The state’s Realtors Association says while fewer homes are on the market, the price for those homes that are available is going up.  Realtors say the average price for a home in Wisconsin topped 200-thousand-dollars last month.  But home sales are down.  The Wisconsin Realtors Association says sales dropped almost 10-percent last month.  June is supposed to be the busiest month of the year for home sales.

LAWMAKERS LOOK TO LAND WOODED LAND

Lawmakers in Madison are looking to spend four-million-dollars to place another 14-thousand-acres of woodlands off limits.  The state’s budget writing committee, the Joint Finance Committee, yesterday approved four-point-three-million-dollars to buy the land in Iron County.  But that may not be enough.  The state’s Department of Natural Resources says the land could be worth as much as six-and-a-half-million-dollars.  The sellers, Keweenaw Land Association, will now have to decide if they want to let the land go at that price.

The National Weather Service is confirming a fifth tornado touchdown in Northeast Wisconsin.  The weather service has been surveying the damage of thousands of trees and confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down near the Waupaca Airport around 11:00 Saturday morning.  Tornadoes in New London, Stevensville, Hortonville, Wrightstown and Greenville have been confirmed.  This makes ten tornadoes reported in the state over the weekend.

SEARCH FOR GARDEN VANDALS GROWS

Police in Wausau are looking for the suspects who vandalized the Monk Botanical Gardens.  Cops say sometime Sunday night or Monday morning a group broke into three buildings, taking an ax from one building and breaking windows, damaging walls and then spraying a fire extinguisher all over summer camp supplies.  They also spray-painted cars parked outside the garden.
