EVERS ANNOUNCES PICK FOR NEW POSITION

Governor Tony Evers makes his pick for an ombudsman to oversee sexual assault cases in the Wisconsin National Guard.  He announced the hiring yesterday of former Georgia National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Brian Bischoff.  Evers decided to create the new position in December after a federal report outlined many problems with how the Guard was handling sexual assault allegations.

MADISON NAMES POET LAUREATE

Madison will soon have its first ever Latina Poet Laureate.  The City Council announced on Thursday that it’s confirming Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway’s choice to appoint Angela Trudell Vasquez to the position.  The third generation Mexican-American poet will start here two-year term on January 20th.  Her first public reading is scheduled at A Room of One’s Own Bookstore on February sixth.

HIGH SPEED CHASE REACHES SPEEDS OVER 100MPH

A chase reaches speed over 100mph and leads to a crash in Jackson County. It was about quarter after 4 on Friday afternoon when Troopers from the Wisconsin State Patrol were advised that Tomah PD officers were involved in a pursuit that was traveling westbound on I94 into Jackson County. NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS DAY

It is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and states face big challenges when it comes to child sex trafficking.  A child is bought or sold for sex in the United States every two minutes, with the average age being 13.  Each year child advocate organization Shared Hope ranks the states for their efforts to stop human trafficking.   Wisconsin earned a B grade in part because the state does not mandate or authorize training or development of training materials for law enforcement

WEEKEND FILL UP A LITTLE LESS THAN NATIONAL AVERAGE

The cost for regular gas in Wisconsin is 13-cents-a-gallon lower than the national average.  Triple-A says the price statewide is two-dollars-and-46-cents today, while it’s two-59 across the country.  The highest average price in the state is the two-62 posted in Superior which is eight-cents-a-gallon higher than last Friday.  Drivers in the capital are paying two-40 and in Milwaukee, two-41.

ONE PERSON GETS PRISON TIME IN EC SHOOTING INCIDENT

One of two people accused of being involved in an Eau Claire shooting is going to prison.  Reports say Nuquii Watkins was found guilty of two charges and sentenced Thursday to six years in prison.  Nuquii’s accused of hitting a man in the face then shooting him in the leg before robbing him in December of 2018.  Chelsey Kendzior reportedly admitted to driving Watkins to the victim’s house.  She pleaded no contest to two charges Thursday and was sentenced to probation.

CONSTRUCTION THEFT, RETAIL FRAUD, DRUGS ALL LEAD TO JAIL

A man who’s already done jail time for stealing tools from an Eau Claire construction site is going back to jail for switching price tags at the Eau Claire Fleet Farm.  Shawn Lanier is accused of defrauding the store of about 200 dollars last January.  Police say Lanier was also found with meth and heroin when he was arrested.  He was sentenced Thursday to 45 days in jail followed by three years probation.

WI LAWMAKERS ANNOUNCE RETIREMENT

Two Wisconsin state lawmakers are retiring at the end of the year.  Democratic Senator Dave Hansen announced Thursday he’s retiring to spend more time with his family.  Republican Representative Bob Kulp also announced Thursday he’s retiring to focus on his family and business.

The Chippewa Falls Police Department claims social media helps recruit new officers.  Police say they’ve recently struggled to get new recruits but that’s starting to change because they’ve started to post entertaining content online.  The department says it’s currently looking for one new officer to join the force.
