KIND KEEN ON TRADE DEAL

Western Wisconsin’s congressman says dairy farmers in the state are getting a big win. Congressman Ron Kind yesterday said the new trade deal with Canada and Mexico will open-up new markets for Wisconsin farmers. The U.S. Senate approved the agreement yesterday. Kind says he hopes that President Trump will sign the deal quickly so farmers in western Wisconsin can get to selling their products.

CVTC APPROVES 48-MILLION REFERENDUM

Taxpayers in the Chippewa Valley are going to see another tax increase question on their spring ballots. The Chippewa Valley Technical College last night approved a 48-million-dollar referendum. The idea is to raise property taxes to build two new centers, as well as pay for day-to-day expenses. Voters will have their say on the proposed tax increase in April.

SHERIFF SAYS NO THREAT TO PUBLIC AFTER SUSPICIOUS DEATH

There are more questions than answers about that suspicious death in Dunn County. The sheriff in Menomonie yesterday refused to say why they are calling a man’s death Wednesday night near Colfax suspicious. Investigators are also not saying anything about the person of interest in the case. The sheriff did say that there is no threat to the public, and that the man’s death is an isolated incident.

NO “NO” VOTES FOR NATIONAL GUARD FREE COLLEGE CLASSES

Every single National Guard member in Wisconsin could soon get some guarantees about their college classes. The state Assembly on Wednesday approved a plan to allow all guardsmen who are deployed to drop college or grad school classes free of charge. Right now, Wisconsin only allows troops who are deployed for longer periods of time to have that flexibility. The proposal passed without a single ‘No’ vote. It now heads to Governor Evers’ office.

PROBATION FOR VA NURSE

A former nurse at the VA hospital in Tomah will not go to prison for over-prescribing opioid pain pills. A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced Jennifer Amble to three years of probation. Prosecutors say she wrote 83 prescriptions for a friend who was neither a veteran or a patient at the Tomah facility. That friend overdosed back in 2014.

RIVALRY HEATS UP WITH GB AND SAN FRAN FIRE DEPARTMENTS

The rivalry between Green Bay and San Francisco is heating up.  The fire departments of both cities have a friendly wager on Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.  On Tuesday the losing team’s department chief must donate 100-dollars to a burn prevention charity, install smoke alarms with the winning teams logo and wear the winning team’s jersey for the day.  The winning team’s department will also receive a donation of 50 smoke alarms from Kidde.

ENGINEERS HEADING TO KUWAIT

An engineering detachment with the Wisconsin Army National Guard is headed to Kuwait.  About 15 soldiers based in Milwaukee with the 924th engineer facilities detachment left for the Middle East after a ceremony in Madison this morning.  The soldiers will provide facilities management for the Department of Public Works at the base in Kuwait.  The soldiers will be deployed for about a year.

EC WARMING CENTERS PLANNING FOR WEEKEND TEMPS

Over the upcoming weekend we are expecting frigid temperatures. When this happens, Catholic Charities Sojourner House activates its overflow accommodation procedure. On average, the Sojourner House is able to provide an overnight place to stay for 53 adult men and women. When actual overnight temperatures fall at or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit (not including wind-chill or feels like temperatures), the overflow will be accommodated. Mayor de Blasio is still getting lots of blowback today for his “Bagel Day” tweet about how he likes one of New York’s most famous foods. The mayor tweeted out Wednesday that he likes his bagels “Whole wheat. Toasted.
