LOCAL POLLING PLACES PREP FOR ELECTION

Eau Claire is getting ready for in-person voting in August. City Clerk Carrie Riepl said 300 poll workers are signed up to work the election and some want to commit for November.  There was a shortage of poll workers in April because of the coronavirus pandemic.  Riepl said anyone wanting to work at the polls will have to attend training in mid-July.

POLK CO. MAN MISSING

A man is missing out of Polk County.  The Sheriff’s Office said 40-year-old Andre Lyons was reported missing Sunday after leaving a home near the St. Croix county line for his own home north of Amery.  Police said they haven’t found the yellow motorcycle he could have been riding, and the Department of Natural Resources searched the area with an airplane.

WI UNEMPLOYMENT BUMP COULD CONTINUE

The top man at Wisconsin’s unemployment office wants to see the federal unemployment sweetener extended, even as his office struggles to meet the needs of people who are out of work. Department of Workforce Development Secretary Caleb Frostman yesterday said he wants to see the 600 dollar-a-week coronavirus enhancer extended. SCHOOL AID ESTIMATES RELEASED

Most of Wisconsin’s local schools are getting more money from the state. The Department of Public Instruction yesterday released its general school aid estimate for the next school year. DPI says, overall, schools will split about five billion-dollars. That’s up three-and-a-half percent from the last school year. Not every school will see more though. DPI says 114 of the state’s 421 school districts will see less money from Madison.

WI CORONAVIRUS CASE COUNT TICKS UP, HOSPITALIZATIONS DOWN

Eau Claire County’s public health director says about a third of people who’ve recently tested positive for the coronavirus don’t know where they picked it up. Lieske Giese yesterday said there’s been 100 new positive tests in the past two weeks. That brings Eau Claire County’s total to 240 since March. Giese did not say if any of the new cases have landed anyone in the hospital. She did say that 176 of those 240 people have fully recovered. On

A crash turns fatal in Wilson. It was a little after 2 in the afternoon on Wednesday, July 1st when crews were dispatched to the intersection of CTH H and Henneman Rd, Township of Wilson, to investigate a motorcycle vs. SUV crash. LOCAL COUNTIES APPROVED FOR NEW PROGRAM

There could soon be fewer people spending time in jail in the Chippewa Valley. Both Eau Claire and Chippewa counties have been selected to be a part of a pre-trial monitoring program. The idea is to quiz people who’ve been arrested, then determine if they need to stay in jail or if they can be released ahead of trial. NEW CLASS AIMS FOR EQUALITY

There is a new class for incoming students at UW-Eau Claire. The university yesterday announced an equity, diversity, and inclusion training program. Director Jodi Thessing-Ritter says the idea is to get students “engaged” so they can be a part of UW-EC’s inclusive campus. The class is a 50 minute online training that includes quizzes and videos. New and incoming students are required to take the class, but won’t get any credits for completing it.
