Judge Sets Trial Date in Hennepin Co.

 A judge is ruling that the four former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd will be tried together in Hennepin County Court.  Judge Peter Cahill determined this morning that the trial will start on March 8th in the downtown Minneapolis courthouse.  The justice also ruled that cameras will be allowed in the courtroom and the jury will be sequestered and will remain anonymous for their safety.

WI Healthcare System Sees Surge

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says cases of coronavirus in the state increased 531-percent over the last eight weeks. In a news conference yesterday, Secretary Andrea Palm said it’s possible to stop the spread, but soon hospital systems will reach capacity and won’t be able to meet demand.  That would put a strain on hospital beds and frontline workers during the ongoing pandemic, and now flu season.

UWEC Considers Online Shift

Instructors at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are calling for online only classes after Thanksgiving. A group of staff sent a letter to the Chancellor saying moving classes online could prevent a potential surge of cases this semester. Eau Claire County reports nearly 40-percent of all positive cases are among people between 18-and-24-years-old.

WI Sees Over 70% Voter Turnout

Over 70 percent of people in Wisconsin cast a ballot on Tuesday. The Wisconsin Elections Commission says the unofficial voter turnout is just under 73 percent. Nearly three-point-three million people voted in Wisconsin on Tuesday.

 The presidential race in Wisconsin has been called, but it might not be over. President Trump’s campaign yesterday promised to ask for a recount in the state. WI Coronavirus Cases Hit New Record

Wisconsin’s coronavirus numbers continue to go up. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported a record five-thousand-935 positive tests and 54 additional deaths. Numbers from the state show that people between 10 and 30-years-old make-up about a third of Wisconsin’s coronavirus positives, but account for just three of the state’s over two-thousand deaths. Seventy-five-percent of Wisconsin’s coronavirus deaths are in people who are 70-plus, even though they account for less than 10-percent of the state’s coronavirus cases.

25% Cap 100% Done

Governor Tony Evers’ cap on crowds at bars, restaurants, and stores across the state is dead, for now.  The Wisconsin Supreme Court yesterday refused to hear arguments in the case, essentially shutting the door on the governor’s 25 percent limit. The governor argued that the cap was necessary to limit the spread of the coronavirus, but the state’s Tavern League and a handful of local bars said the cap would do nothing more than put them out of business. NFIB Pushes Against Naming Businesses

The NFIB in Wisconsin is the latest to say that naming bars, restaurants, or businesses that have had coronavirus positives doesn’t do any good. Bill G. Smith with the NFIB here in Wisconsin says the only reason Governor Evers wants to name the businesses is to punish them. The NFIB yesterday filed an amicus brief in the court case to stop the governor from doxxing places where workers or customers have tested positive. La Crosse Schools Look Ahead to 2021

It will be January at the earliest before kids in La Crosse go back to school. The city’s school district yesterday said it is extending online-only classes until early next year because coronavirus numbers in La Crosse continue to increase. The district sent a letter home to parents yesterday explaining that until the numbers come down, kids will be learning from home. Thanksgiving Concerns Dished Up

Add Thanksgiving to the list of holidays that worry public health managers in Chippewa Falls. Chippewa County Health Director Angela Weideman yesterday said with coronavirus numbers on the rise in Wisconsin, now is not the time to risk the health of older loved ones with a big Thanksgiving. Weideman says families need to limit Thanksgiving, and all other get-togethers, to just the people living inside their homes.
