Dane Co. Sees Dangerous Trend

COVID-19 related hospitalizations in Dane County have more than tripled in the past month.  The county reached a new record today with 144 COVID hospitalizations.  Officials call the numbers alarming and disturbing.  Public Health Madison and Dane County is asking employers to allow employees to work from home if possible and is also asking people to stop gathering in groups for the next few weeks.

Coronavirus Affects UW Enrollment

The coronavirus is having an apparent effect on enrollment in the University of Wisconsin System.  The UW System reported today that only three of its campuses saw an increase in enrollment including Madison, Green Bay and Parkside.  Platteville enrollment dropped by nearly nine-percent with the Milwaukee campus down nearly five-and-a-half percent.

Voting System Audit Scheduled in EC

As vote counting continues across the county, the City of Eau Claire will conduct a voting system audit on November 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Eau Claire County Courthouse located at 721 Oxford Avenue, Rooms 1301 and 1302, 721 Oxford Avenue, Eau Claire, WI. Judge Sets Trial Date in Hennepin Co.

 A judge is ruling that the four former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd will be tried together in Hennepin County Court.  Judge Peter Cahill determined this morning that the trial will start on March 8th in the downtown Minneapolis courthouse.  The justice also ruled that cameras will be allowed in the courtroom and the jury will be sequestered and will remain anonymous for their safety.

WI Healthcare System Sees Surge

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says cases of coronavirus in the state increased 531-percent over the last eight weeks. In a news conference yesterday, Secretary Andrea Palm said it’s possible to stop the spread, but soon hospital systems will reach capacity and won’t be able to meet demand.  That would put a strain on hospital beds and frontline workers during the ongoing pandemic, and now flu season.

UWEC Considers Online Shift

Instructors at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are calling for online only classes after Thanksgiving. A group of staff sent a letter to the Chancellor saying moving classes online could prevent a potential surge of cases this semester. Eau Claire County reports nearly 40-percent of all positive cases are among people between 18-and-24-years-old.

WI Sees Over 70% Voter Turnout

Over 70 percent of people in Wisconsin cast a ballot on Tuesday. The Wisconsin Elections Commission says the unofficial voter turnout is just under 73 percent. Nearly three-point-three million people voted in Wisconsin on Tuesday.

 The presidential race in Wisconsin has been called, but it might not be over. President Trump’s campaign yesterday promised to ask for a recount in the state. WI Coronavirus Cases Hit New Record

Wisconsin’s coronavirus numbers continue to go up. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported a record five-thousand-935 positive tests and 54 additional deaths. Numbers from the state show that people between 10 and 30-years-old make-up about a third of Wisconsin’s coronavirus positives, but account for just three of the state’s over two-thousand deaths. Seventy-five-percent of Wisconsin’s coronavirus deaths are in people who are 70-plus, even though they account for less than 10-percent of the state’s coronavirus cases.
