WI Coronavirus Deaths Hit Daily High, Holiday Travel Discouraged

Wisconsin is reporting the largest number of coronavirus deaths since the state started tracking back in March. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported 104 deaths related to the virus. That is the most in a single day ever in Wisconsin. DHS’s numbers continue to show that it is mostly older people who are dying from the virus. Clark Co. Looking for Fake Deputies

The sheriff in Clark County is looking for two fake deputies. The sheriff’s office took to Facebook yesterday to ask for help in finding two men who pulled over a car in the Township of Hoard on Monday. The sheriff’s office says one man claimed to be a ‘Dunn County Warden Sheriff’, while the other said he was a Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy. Both men were armed. Local Charity Continues to Operate

The woman accused of stealing from an Eau Claire nonprofit is still running her charity. Shauna Hanson’s lawyer yesterday said she cannot be banned from having contact with the Helping Hands For Our Children in the Chippewa Valley charity because she is still helping people. Prosecutors say Hanson stole 65 thousand-dollars in donations. She’s facing theft charges, and is due back in court in January.

OH, Deer!

It looks like a good first weekend for a lot of deer hunters in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Natural Resources is reporting a two-point-three percent increase in deer harvested during the first weekend of gun season. DNR says their numbers show hunters bagged just over 95 thousand deer between Saturday morning and Sunday evening. DNR also said that three hunters were hurt and one died in accidents during the first hunting weekend.

Nursing Students Get a Boost

Nursing students who volunteer at hospitals in Wisconsin can earn some tuition credit. UW President Tommy Thompson yesterday announced a plan to offer 500 dollars in tuition credit to qualified nursing students in the UW System who pitch-in at hospitals over the winter break. Thompson says the students can help with vaccines or take-over some clerical work that frees-up other nurses to provide care. Thompson says the tuition credit is just part of the Wisconsin Idea.

A Flood of New Fees for Flood Insurance?

People who live in La Crosse could soon be paying more for flood insurance because of questionable record keeping at city hall. FEMA back in September said La Crosse is no longer considered compliant with its flood insurance program. That means flood insurance rates could jump ten percent. FEMA says La Crosse failed to keep up-to-date on some of its data, information, and processes. La Crosse has til mid-December to fix the issues, but it’s unclear if that can happen.
