WI Prisons Hit by Covid-19

Three more of Wisconsin’s prison inmates have died from COVID-19. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections announced the new deaths Wednesday bringing the total across the state to 14. Prisoner deaths are recorded as coronavirus related if a coroner confirms the virus was an underlying cause or significant contributor to the death.

They say it’s a white gold ring set with three bands and the ring may have been lost in a surrounding community. It’s the season for snowy owls in Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the first snowy owl was spotted and photographed in Dane County in early November, but the Dane County Humane Society says they found the bird sick, and it passed away unexpectedly. At the end of the month, the Department of Natural Resources reported three more snowy owls in Chippewa, Lincoln, and Bayfield counties. Weekly Jobless Claims Dip Below Expectations

The number of jobless claims filed last week are dropping well below expectations.  About 712-thousand Americans filed first-time unemployment claims last week.  Analysts were expecting the claims to reach about 780-thousand.  About five-and-a-half-million Americans continue to make unemployment claims.  Earlier this week a government watchdog reported the Department of Labor was undercounting the number of people receiving unemployment benefits.  It also said they were underpaying them from a special program Congress authorized to address the economic fallout from the pandemic.

Rittenhouse Due in Court

 The teenager charged with killing two people during a protest this summer over the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin is due back in court today.  Kyle Rittenhouse is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing.  The 17-year-old is accused of shooting and killing two people and wounding a third during civil unrest in Kenosha in August.  He is facing six criminal counts including first degree reckless homicide.  A defense attorney for Rittenhouse filed a motion this week to dismiss

Local Officials Urge Safety, WI Coronavirus Vaccine Update

WI coronavirus cases continue to top 3, 000. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported 37- hundred new positives and 82 new deaths. However, Wisconsin’s coronavirus count has steadily dropped since a peak at the beginning of November. Here locally, Add Chippewa County Health Director Angela Weideman to the list of people suggesting quarantines just in case. Clark Co. Teens Facing Charges After Illegal Hunt

Authorities in Clark County say as many as eight teenagers killed 40 deer during an illegal hunting spree last month. The sheriff’s office and game wardens started investigating after people found deer that had been shot and left in their fields. There’s no age on the teens, but all could be facing misdemeanor hunting charges. The D.A. in Clark County says they are working on an ‘appropriate’ punishment for the teens.

WI DWD Claims Overpayment on Unemployment Claims

Some of the people who waited weeks or months to get their unemployment benefits in Wisconsin are now being told they have to repay some of that money. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development yesterday said it overpaid unemployment claims by 44-million-dollars. Some people who got unemployment checks are now getting letters asking for some of the money back. DWD Interim director Amy Pechacek says some people may not have to repay the state, and that each case is being double-checked on a case-by-case
