WI Budget Battles Continue

There’s a new report that says Wisconsin doesn’t need to raise taxes. The MacIver Institute last week ran the numbers on Governor Evers’ budget, finding that the governor wants to raise taxes by one-point-six-billion dollars in the state and spend about eight-billion more in his next state budget. MacIver’s Brett Healy says Wisconsin has a billion-and-a-half-dollar surplus and a nearly billion-dollar rainy day fund, so there’s no reason to raise taxes. O”FISH”al Deal Could Mean No Charges

An agreement in Wisconsin’s caviar trafficking case could mean no charges for two caviar dealers. Victor and Mary Schneider have agreed to get out of the caviar business for a year and to stay out of trouble. If they do that, prosecutors in Fond du Lac say they will not press charges against them. The Schniders are two of the people caught-up in the case of a former DNR official who sent caviar eggs to connected dealers in exchange for gifts

Marquette University Announces Return

Marquette University is the latest school to say it will be 100-percent back to normal in the fall. University president Michael Lovell yesterday sent a letter to students and faculty members saying they are planning for a full return to in-person classes and dorm rooms. Lovell says Marquette proved how well they could handle the coronavirus this year. He said more details about how the school will handle the virus next year will come in a few weeks or months.

National Park Invites Visitors

Starting today, visitors can enter Yosemite National Park in California without making a reservation. Park officials made the announcement last week saying they are working to increase accessibility to the park now that the state’s COVID-19 infection rate is trending down. Yosemite started implementing a day-use reservation system last summer as many turned to outdoor recreation and crowded into the park. The number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in Wisconsin now tops 564-thousand.  Health Service officials are reporting 308 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.  There were no new deaths reported today, so that toll remains at more than six-thousand-400. Public Defenders See Change to Pay Scale

Public defenders are getting a break when it comes to raises.  Currently public defenders’ pay is limited as are yearly raises.  The new law signed by Governor Tony Evers today will allow for raises based on their merits.  The governor says public defenders play a vital role in ensuring an efficient and just system.  The state’s Public Defender’s Office has lost nearly 80 staff members in the last year as many left for better-paying jobs.

Watt Flips (to the) Birds

He has been a Badger, a Texan and now he’s a Cardinal.  JJ Watt and the Arizona Cardinals have come to terms on a deal that sends the Wisconsin native to the Valley of the Sun.  The team confirms it is a two-year deal.  The five time All-Pro defensive end played ten years for the Texans after his career at Wisconsin.  He was released by the Texans per his request last month.
