A Life Remembered

It is going to be a sad goodbye for a lot of Eau Claire Memorial students today. The funeral for 14-year-old Brooke Kelly is scheduled for later this afternoon. Kelly died in a car wreck last month where she was thrown from the car. Three other students were hurt in the wreck. Kelly’s family remembered her as vibrant and dazzling in her obituary. Her funeral is set for Notre Dame Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls.

Black History Month Begins

 Black History Month starts today.  During the month of February, Americans are called on to celebrate the achievements of African Americans as the month recognizes their central role in American history.  The celebration was created by historian Carter Woodson, who believed black Americans were not adequately represented in the study of American history.  Woodson hoped for the day when black history would be accepted as a part of American history.  Formerly known as Negro History Week, Black History Month was

Manhunt Underway After WI Mall Shooting

There is a manhunt underway in northeastern Wisconsin. Police are looking for the 17-year-old who they say shot and killed one person and wounded another at the Fox River Mall. Grand Chute Police say they are looking for 17-year-old Dezman Ellis. Officers say he killed a 19-year-old in the mall yesterday, though they are not saying why. Ellis’ pictures are online, and police say anyone who knows anything about his whereabouts should call 911 immediately.

There’s a new fire truck in Eau Claire. Crews welcomed the new ladder truck to Station Five on Friday. Firefighters pushed the truck into the garage, which is part of a tradition among firemen.

WI Coronavirus Cases Trend Down, Vaccine Rollout Continues

It’s the latest milestone number for Wisconsin’s coronavirus vaccination effort. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported that over 100 thousand people in the state have been fully vaccinated against the virus. Wisconsin has seen a slow rollout of the vaccine, and many people in the state’s first eligibility phase have not yet received their shots. In all, DHS says doctors and nurses in the state have administered 544 thousand of the 846 thousand doses allocated to the state. The last coronavirus

Dodge Co. Standoff Lasts Hours

A man from Oshkosh went from trying to outrun the police in Dodge County to trying to wait them out. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office says deputies helped in a police chase Saturday night that ended with an eight-hour standoff. The chase crossed through Juneau and into Beaver Dam. Report Questions Voter ID

A new report says nearly 40-thousand voters who cast indefinitely confined ballots in the November election didn’t provide any voter ID. The Menomonie Area Chamber and Visitor Center is beginning its snow sculpture contest today. The idea is to see who can be the most creative with the snow they have. The Chamber’s Ashley Demuth says there will be prizes for sculptures, but she says the whole idea is to have some fun. The only rules are that the sculptures must be family friendly and non-political.

Groundhog Day comes up again, this week.  The annual forecast offered by Punxsutawney Phil is scheduled for this Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:25-a.m. Eastern time in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  The event is part of western Pennsylvania folk tradition alive since the 1880s.  Around sunrise this Tuesday, the popular marmot will emerge from his burrow and if Phil sees his shadow, it means there’ll be six more weeks of winter.  Otherwise, if Phil doesn’t see his shadow, it’ll be an early spring

One Year Since First Coronavirus Case Confirmed in WI

It’s the anniversary of the first case of coronavirus to be treated in Madison.  Yesterday marked a year since UW Health attended to its first COVID-19 patient in University Hospital.  The patient had recently returned from a trip to China where exposure to the disease happened.  Recovery time for the patient was around a month.  It was the first case in Wisconsin and the 12th reported case in the United States.
