WI Continues Downward Trend; Community Memorial Planned

The number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in Wisconsin now tops 564-thousand.  Health Service officials are reporting 308 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.  There were no new deaths reported today, so that toll remains at more than six-thousand-400. Public Defenders See Change to Pay Scale

Public defenders are getting a break when it comes to raises.  Currently public defenders’ pay is limited as are yearly raises.  The new law signed by Governor Tony Evers today will allow for raises based on their merits.  The governor says public defenders play a vital role in ensuring an efficient and just system.  The state’s Public Defender’s Office has lost nearly 80 staff members in the last year as many left for better-paying jobs.

Watt Flips (to the) Birds

He has been a Badger, a Texan and now he’s a Cardinal.  JJ Watt and the Arizona Cardinals have come to terms on a deal that sends the Wisconsin native to the Valley of the Sun.  The team confirms it is a two-year deal.  The five time All-Pro defensive end played ten years for the Texans after his career at Wisconsin.  He was released by the Texans per his request last month.

Early Morning Crash Delays Traffic

A car versus bus crash in Eau Claire is causing some traffic delays this morning. You may have seen the coverage with WEAU-TV, as they posted photos of the accident to Facebook showing first responders on the scene near Memorial High School. They say traffic is down to one-lane on Clairemont Avenue for a stretch.

Tornado Season Whipping Up Concerns

 It could be a bad year for tornadoes, according Eau Claire County Emergency Management. They say they’re starting to see several tornado forecasts being predicted and shared across the country. The National Weather Service doesn’t yet have a prediction for tornado season. Historically, there have been a moderate to high number of tornadoes reported in Western Wisconsin, compared to the rest of the state.

EC Sets Sight on New Title

Eau Claire is vying for Wisconsin’s Fittest Community this month. The city parks, recreation and forestry department says beginning today through the month of March, Eau Claire and 38 other communities are expected to compete in fitness challenges across the state. It’s ten-dollars to sign-up before March 14th. The winning city gets a trophy.

Black History Month has wrapped up and now the start of March brings Women’s History Month.  Congress declared the first official Women’s History Month in March of 1987.  Prior to that, then-President Jimmy Carter in 1980 designated the first National Women’s History Week, beginning on the 8th of March – which is International Women’s Day.

Investigation Continues After Weekend Fire

Investigators are looking for what started a fire at an empty Chippewa Falls business on Saturday. It took firefighters a bit to put out the flames at the building on West Willow Street. No one was inside, so there were no injuries. Fire crews say the task now is to figure out what caused the fire.
