The Badgers’ women’s volleyball team will be haunted by another NCAA tournament sweep. Fourth-ranked Texas swept the lady Badgers last night in the women’s volleyball final four. UW was the topped ranked team in the nation. This year’s sweep comes after a gut-punch of a sweep for the Badgers in the 2019 tournament as well. The Badgers finished the season at 16-1.

There are 732 new COVID-19 cases being confirmed by health department officials today.  The department says those cases push the total number of coronavirus cases to just shy of 593-thousand.  There were four additional deaths reported today, raising the death toll to more than six-thousand-700. Governor Tony Evers vetoes several bills that would have controlled how the state could use funding from the American Rescue Plan.  The governor says the Republican legislature is committed to spending just 200-million-dollars to help small businesses, while he has allocated 600-million-dollars to help small businesses recover from the pandemic.  Evers today announced the state will award up to 420-million-dollars to small businesses affected by the pandemic, which will help about 84-thousand small businesses.  Each will be eligible for grant

We are entering “construction season” as we say here in Wisconsin, and we’re reminded to watch for the orange cones and vests. Chippewa Highway Commissioner Brian Kelley is asking for the public’s help in keeping highway workers safe throughout the 2021 road construction season. On Wednesday, April 21, just before 5pm, a Barron County Deputy observed a van passing a car on Hwy 25, just north of Barron, in a no passing zone. As the deputy went to stop the vehicle it sped up and failed to stop for the deputy. Achase ensued for about 11 miles when the driver came to a stop on 13 1⁄2 Street and 20 1⁄2 Avenue. Public health leaders in Chippewa County are concerned with a rise in coronavirus cases. Public Health Director Angela Weideman says the county is at a severe risk level for COVID-19 and new cases are rising almost every day.  She encouraged people to continue mitigation measures like washing hands, social distancing, and wearing masks. A little over half the people who are eligible for the coronavirus vaccine in Wisconsin have gotten one dose. Julie Willems Van Dijk with the state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said 51 percent of people 16 and older have gotten a shot. She says DHS is focusing on getting those people their second shot. Vaccinations in Wisconsin have stalled, overall 41 percent of people in the state have gotten one dose of the vaccine. Madison’s mayor is laying out a two-year plan to fight climate change. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway yesterday unveiled her Climate Forward agenda. The plan focuses on green energy, including adding energy efficiency requirements for public housing and commercial buildings in the city. The mayor also wants to train workers to install solar panels, or help them find jobs planting trees or work on electric vehicles.
