Wausau Plans for Student Return

Parents in Wausau have just a few days to sign their kids up for in-person classes for the rest of the school year. The school district last week said it is expanding the number of students who can return to elementary school. Superintendent Keith Hilt says parents have until Thursday to sign their kids up for class. There’s no word on just how many kids Wausau schools expect to come back for this last month of school.

Jets Planning to Fly High

Some folks in some parts of Wisconsin are going to hear the jets again this week. Madison’s 115th Fighter Wing is once again conducting night flight training missions. The jets will launch from Madison about 10 p.m., and will fly their missions. Guard officials say the idea is to have the planes fly where they will be least disruptive. The flights start tonight and will last through Thursday.

The Republicans in charge of Wisconsin’s new state budget say they are not going to let Governor Evers cram policy changes into the state’s spending plan. State Rep Mark Born and state Senator Howard Marklein on Friday said they’ve cut pieces of the governor’s proposed budget. Runners Lace Up

It is one more sign that things are returning to normal. Runners raced in Eau Claire’s abridged Bridge-to-Bridge marathon over the weekend. This year’s race was staggered to keep the crowd small, but organizers say the race went well. They had to cancel last year’s race because of the coronavirus. There are plans for a full race in Eau Claire later this fall.

Mustang Rides High

Another Menomonie Mustang has a shot at an NFL career. The Carolina Panthers signed former Mustang star, and UW fullback Mason Stokke to an undrafted rookie contract. The deal means Stokke will have a shot to make the team. Stokke is the second Menomonie grad to get a shot at the NFL, quarterback Nate Stanley made the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad last year. Stokke spent his Saturday in Menomonie, waiting to see if an NFL team would take a chance

WI Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, More Injured

  A casino shooting in Wisconsin has left two people dead and one seriously injured.  This witness says he was talking with an employee in a casino restaurant when the shooting took place. Brown County authorities say the incident started at a restaurant in the Oneida [[ oh-NYE-dah ]] casino near Green Bay, and three people were then shot inside the Radisson Hotel connected to the casino.  Police then shot the suspect outside the hotel, killing him.  No further details have been

It’s Derby Day. Essential Quality is the favorite to win today’s 147th Kentucky Derby. But the trainer for “Hidden Stash,” Vicki Oliver, told CBS This Morning she’s looking to win and become the first woman trainer to do so.  She says it’s been a long time coming. Capitol Opens to Public Again

The Wisconsin state capitol building reopens to the general public this week.  Governor Tony Evers office announced yesterday that the building will open after being closed due to the Governor’s COVID-19 restrictions.  The public is to be allowed back inside the building from 8:00-a.m. to 4:30-p.m. beginning this coming Monday.  There will be no evening or weekend hours.  Only lawmakers and staffers have used the building while members of the public have not been allowed inside since March of last year.
