WI Jobs Stay Steady

An April report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum shows the state did much better than it’s neighbors for jobs lost during the pandemic. The data shows Wisconsin’s employment loss percentage was the lowest among five Midwest states. Wisconsin had the lowest drop in total jobs from September of 2019 to September 2020. Iowa is second, followed by Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan.

Historic Paper Mill Destroyed

A historic paper mill is destroyed after a fire overnight. The Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue department says the former Whiting Paper Mill now used as apartments caught fire last night. They say the fire was contained early this morning, but it will take a few more hours to investigate and ensure it’s completely out. They say no one was hurt.

WI Casino Shooting Remains Under Investigation

Investigators looking into the deadly weekend shooting at the Oneida Casino may have more answers later today. Police will only say that a man walked into the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center and shot three people. Officers then shot the gunman when he tried to leave. Two of the three victims died, the third was rushed to the hospital. The Brown County Sheriff’s office believes the gunman was looking for a specific employee, but that person was not there. The

We could get some more answers about the large police presence in one Chetek neighborhood yesterday. Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said deputies were there, as was their armored Humvee, but he did not say why. The sheriff may release some more information later today.

WI Coronavirus Cases Hold Steady, Vaccinations Dip

Wisconsin’s coronavirus numbers are just about the same as last week, and the week before. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported a seven-day positivity average of just under three percent. That’s about where Wisconsin’s coronavirus count has been for weeks. DHS says there are just over eight thousand ‘active’ coronavirus cases in the state. Wausau Plans for Student Return

Parents in Wausau have just a few days to sign their kids up for in-person classes for the rest of the school year. The school district last week said it is expanding the number of students who can return to elementary school. Superintendent Keith Hilt says parents have until Thursday to sign their kids up for class. There’s no word on just how many kids Wausau schools expect to come back for this last month of school.

Jets Planning to Fly High

Some folks in some parts of Wisconsin are going to hear the jets again this week. Madison’s 115th Fighter Wing is once again conducting night flight training missions. The jets will launch from Madison about 10 p.m., and will fly their missions. Guard officials say the idea is to have the planes fly where they will be least disruptive. The flights start tonight and will last through Thursday.

The Republicans in charge of Wisconsin’s new state budget say they are not going to let Governor Evers cram policy changes into the state’s spending plan. Runners Lace Up

It is one more sign that things are returning to normal. Runners raced in Eau Claire’s abridged Bridge-to-Bridge marathon over the weekend. This year’s race was staggered to keep the crowd small, but organizers say the race went well. They had to cancel last year’s race because of the coronavirus. There are plans for a full race in Eau Claire later this fall.
