WI Vaccinations Near 40%

Wisconsin’s coronavirus vaccination numbers show more people are getting their second shot. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said nearly 40-percent of people in the state are now fully vaccinated against the virus. DHS says 45-percent of people in the state have had at least one dose. The numbers show the gap between one shot and both shots is closing. But that also means fewer people are getting a shot. Slow Roll For Faster Internet in WI

Wisconsin’s governor wants to spend some of the state’s billions in federal stimulus money on faster internet. Governor Evers yesterday announced a plan to spend 100-million of the state’s two-point-five-billion-dollars in American Rescue Plan money on broadband internet. Republican lawmakers say they support internet spending but want to make sure that the money is spent wisely. The governor says ‘unserved’ and ‘underserved’ communities can start applying for the money in June.

Paper Mill Fire Investigation Continues

Arson investigators in Menasha say the fire at the old Whiting Paper Mill wasn’t an accident. The fire department said on Facebook yesterday that the fire was ‘not caused by an act of nature.’ Investigators are not saying what caused the fire, but they say their probe is still ongoing. The fire gutted the old and abandoned mill earlier this month. Crews are waiting to tear down what’s left.

Eau Claire, Richland Counties Added to Wisconsin Gypsy Moth Quarantine

Trapping data collected by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) indicates that the gypsy moth, an invasive insect from Europe that feeds on the leaves of more than 300 tree species, is now established in Eau Claire and Richland counties. As a result, both counties have been placed under state and federal gypsy moth quarantine, joining most of eastern and central Wisconsin already considered to be infested with the pest. Slow Rollout for High Speed Internet

One hundred-million-dollars in funding to expand high speed broadband will soon be available.  Governor Tony Evers says the funds are federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act.  The governor says to qualify for the grant program projects have to meet certain U.S. Treasury guidelines.
