Reeling in a Free Fishing Weekend

Fish for free in Wisconsin this weekend.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says June 5th and 6th residents and non-residents can fish without a license or stamps.  They say fishing regulations still apply, and people are asked to wear a life jacket when fishing from a boat, kayak, canoe, or paddle board.

Deadly Crash in Trempealeau Co.

A motorcyclist is dead after crashing into a deer near the Town of Hale.  The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office says 74-year-old Gary Heath was thrown from the bike into a ditch and suffered serious injuries.  Heath was flown to a hospital where he died. Police say he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

WI Sees Dip in Unemployment Claims

The number of new unemployment claims are down in Wisconsin.  The U.S. Department of Labor reports initial claims filed last week went down again.  Claims have been trending down as more people return to seasonal work.  Wisconsin is tied with Indiana with the eighth lowest unemployment rate in the U.S.

New A.D. Sounds Off On Wisconsin

Chris McIntosh has been named Athletic Director at the University of Wisconsin.  During his official announcement, he said the program is known for big moments. McIntosh has been deputy A-D since 2017.  He takes over for Barry Alvarez who is retiring.  McIntosh was a four-year starter for U-W football and was part of two Big Ten championship teams.

Weekly Jobless Claims Dip Below 400,000

Fewer Americans are applying for first-time unemployment benefits as the labor market continues to recover.  Numbers out today from the Labor Department show 385-thousand applications received last week.  That’s down from the previous week’s 406-thousand.  It’s also better than the 393-thousand most analysts had been expecting.  What’s equally important is that initial jobless claims have now dipped below 400-thousand for the first time since the very early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Search Continues for Shooting Suspects

Eau Claire Police are hoping someone recognizes the cars involved in Memorial Day’s shooting near downtown. Investigators released pictures of the cars yesterday. They are asking anyone who knows anything about the cars or the shooting to call them. Eau Claire Police say despite rumors online, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.

No Injuries in Local Apartment Fire

There’s some cleaning-up and airing-out to do at the Mac Arthur Fields Apartments after a fire yesterday. Eau Claire firefighters say the fire was smoldering when they arrived. They quickly put it out. No one was hurt, but several people had to clear-out of their apartments because of the fire.
