Several thousand Afghan refugees are to be temporarily housed at Wisconsin’s Fort McCoy, but Governor Tony Evers says that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be settled in Wisconsin, as organizations work to assist them once they arrive. Tribal Nations Offer Vaccine Incentives

The Oneida Nation is offering cash to get tribal members vaccinated. The tribe yesterday said it is offering 500-dollar sweeteners to anyone 14 and older who gets a shot. Just under 30-thousand tribal members in the state have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, which is about 37-percent of Wisconsin’s native population. Oneida’s health director, Debbie Danforth, says people have to get both doses of the vaccine in order to qualify for the 500 dollars. And they aren’t alone.

WI Sees Increase in FoodShare

A lot more people in Wisconsin are on food stamps because of the coronavirus. Numbers from the state show enrollment in FoodShare jumped 30-percent since 2019. Food stamp spending jumped 33-percent in the same two years, to well over a billion-dollars. Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services says that’s because more people are getting the maximum amount of benefits. In all, more than 792-thousand people are on food stamps in the state.

Back to the Re-Drawing Board

The legal fight over Wisconsin’s new political map is continuing. The Republican-led legislature this week asked a judge to toss out a lawsuit from some voter-advocates who want the court to draw the state’s new political map. The voters’ lawsuit also says Wisconsin’s current political map is unconstitutionally out of date. Republican lawmakers say the voters filed their lawsuit one day after the state received the new Census numbers, and the request to have the court draw the map is completely out

Area Schools See Bump

Catholic school leaders in the Chippewa Valley expect another jump in enrollment this year. McDonell Area Catholic Schools’ President Molly Bushman says they saw a 10-percent jump last year, and she expects a similar bump this year. Bushman says a lot of parents looked for an alternative to traditional public schools last year, and a lot of them liked what they found at McDonell. WI Unemployment Below National Average

 Wisconsin’s unemployment rate remains below four-percent and well below the national average.  The Department of Workforce Development says the state’s jobless rate released today is three-point-nine-percent for July.  That’s the fourth straight month at that level.  The national unemployment rate is five-point-four-percent for July.

WI Vaccine Data Shows Differences

New data released by the State Department of Health Services reveals the stark differences between being vaccinated or not against COVID-19.  The statistics show people who are not fully vaccinated are four times more likely to be hospitalized if they come down with COVID-19 in Wisconsin than those who are fully vaccinated.  The data also shows ten times as many people who are unvaccinated have died from the virus compared to those who are vaccinated.

WI State Fair Sees Attendance Dip

For the first time in eight years attendance at the Wisconsin State Fair failed to reach one-million-visitors.  COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the fair last year for the first time in 75 years.  For the seven years prior attendance topped one-million people.  Organizers announced today the State Fair drew just over 841-thousand people.

New Uni’s Take Field

A new Packers uniform will make its debut at Lambeau Field this season.  The new look is inspired by the team’s kelly green uniforms of the early 1950s.  The classic uniform which was unveiled today will debut in Week 7 when the Packers play Washington.
