Online Classes Loading in EC

A lot more kids are taking the option of learning completely online in Eau Claire schools. The city’s school board last night said enrollment in their Virtual School has tripled since Eau Claire removed its enrollment cap over the summer. Superintendent Mike Johnson says there are now 73 elementary students, 47 middle school students and 74 high school students learning completely online. The Virtual School is different from the online classes that were offered while Eau Claire schools were closed

We Have a Name! Lt. Governor Candidate Jumps into Race

There’s a Democrat running for Lt. Governor in Wisconsin. Milwaukee state Senator Lena Taylor yesterday said she’s jumping into the race. Taylor says she wants to help Governor Evers get across the finish line. There are a number of Republicans running for the state’s second in command, but Taylor is so far the only Democrat. Current Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes is running for U.S. Senate next year.

Civics 101: WI Tackles New Lessons

Wisconsin’s superintendent of schools is now all-about teaching civics in the state’s classrooms. Superintendent Jill Underly initially opposed the request from lawmakers for new civics standards in the state schools, and she accused lawmakers of playing political games with students. But yesterday, Underly said she’s excited about the new classes. She’s creating a Wisconsin Civics Advisory Council to write the new lessons. Underly says Wisconsin is best served by ‘active citizens,’ and she hopes the new civics lessons teach young people to become active.

Mayor Barrett Looks for Help

The latest weekend of shootings in Milwaukee has the city’s mayor looking to the state for help. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett yesterday said his heart goes out to the family of an 11-year-old girl who was shot during a drive-by Saturday night. She died, and her five-year-old sister was wounded. Barrett blamed state lawmakers for not sending enough money to Milwaukee to staff its police department and blamed a lack of background checks for illegal gun sales in the city.

Shots Required to Watch Shots

You’re going to need your coronavirus shot if you want to sit courtside at a Bucks game this season. The team yesterday announced it is requiring vaccinations or a negative test for anyone sitting within 15 feet of the court. Fans in those seats will also have to wear face masks. Waking Up a Winner

Someone is waking up a millionaire this morning.  A Powerball ticket sold in California matched all six numbers last night to win the seventh largest jackpot in lottery history.  That’s a whopping 699-million dollars, meaning a very lucky ticket holder could take the cash option of nearly 500-million.  But check those numbers because five people also won a million dollars, with those winning tickets sold in Massachusetts, Virginia, Florida and Arizona.

Pfaff Announces Candidacy

Wisconsin State Senator Brad Pfaff is looking to move to Capitol Hill.  The Democrat announced his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District seat today.  He represents Onalaska in the state senate.  Congressman Ron Kind announced this summer he would not seek re-election.  Republican Derrick Van Orden announced his intention in April to run for the 3rd Congressional District seat.

Authorities Search for Victims’ Car

Green Bay police are looking for the car of a murder victim found on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus.  Police today identified the victim as Jason Mendez-Ramos of Ashwaubenon.  The car police are looking for is a red 2010 Ford Fusion with Wisconsin license plates.  Mendez-Ramos’ body was found last week near the entrance to the arboretum walking path.

Dairy Expansion “Moooo”ves Forward

Agropur Dairy Cooperative in Little Chute is expanding.  Governor Tony Evers announced today four-point-five-million-dollars in business tax credits for that expansion.  Agropur is the largest dairy co-op in North America and it’s building a cheese factory in Little Chute with a nearly 170-million-dollar investment.  Over 50 new jobs will be created and the company expects to spend 60-million-dollars on milk from Wisconsin farms.

It is National Fire Prevention Week and first responders across Wisconsin are urging residents to know what to do when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sounds.  This year the fire protection campaign encourages people to learn the sounds of fire safety.  Officials say when an alarm makes noise and is beeping or chirping you need to take action.  It’s also important to consider somebody who is hard of hearing or deaf in your home so alarms can include strobe lights.  The
