Rhinelander Man Deemed Fit for Trial

One of the man accused in the murder of an Oneida County woman looks to be headed for trial. A judge yesterday found 25-year-old Seth Wakefield from Rhinelander competent enough to face the charges against him. Prosecutors say Wakefield spied on Hannah Miller for her ex-boyfriend so he could kill her. Investigators say that ex, Christopher Anderson, planned to kill Miller and her parents, and kidnap the child he had with Miller. She was found dead back in June. Wakefield

Lokken Stays Put

Former Eau Claire County treasurer Larry Lokken will not be getting out of prison early.  An Eau Claire judge this week said Lokken hasn’t made a serious attempt to pay the nearly 700-thousand-dollars he owes to taxpayers and hasn’t accepted responsibility for what he did.  Lokken asked to be released early because of his age.  He’s got about four years left on a nine-and-a-half year sentence for stealing from county taxpayers.  Prosecutors say Lokken and his deputy stole over a

Gavel Drops: Peggs Sentenced

It’s eight years in prison for Altoona’s former superintendent on child pornography charges.  A federal judge in Madison yesterday handed down Dan Peggs’ sentence.  Peggs pleaded guilty to child porn charges, he was originally facing more serious charges of making child pornography and sex trafficking a minor. He’s due to report to prison in January. Peggs will also have to register as a sex offender for the next 15 years.

There will be an awful lot of baseball jerseys across southeast Wisconsin on this December 3rd.  Today is the day when friends and family members of eight-year-old Jackson Sparks are asking people to wear a jersey to show their support. Sparks is the youngest person to die in the Waukesha parade horror. The idea of jerseys for Jackson took-off online, so much so that the Brewers’ Christian Yelich Tweeted his support yesterday. Criticism Continues in Suspect’s Case

Milwaukee’s district attorney is blaming a young prosecutor for the low bail for the Waukesha parade suspect. D.A. John Chisholm told county supervisors yesterday that an overworked young prosecutor made the decision to allow Darrell Brooks Jr. to be released on one thousand-dollars bail just days before police say he drove through the crowd at Waukesha’s Christmas parade.  Chisholm says he’s not trying to make excuses.  He spoke with commissioners over Zoom, which means there was no chance for reporters

Local Heath Departments Talk Variants

Public health managers in Chippewa County say they don’t have the capacity to test for the Omicron variant. County public health director Angela Weideman says they can’t run a genomic sequencing on the coronavirus variants. She said they didn’t have the capacity to run the same test for the Delta variant either. Weideman says the state’s Department of Health Services is the group that does that kind of work. WI Sees Uptick in Booster Shots

Nearly one out of three people in Wisconsin who are fully vaccinated have now gotten a coronavirus booster shot. The state’s Department of Health Services says Wisconsin went over the one million booster mark earlier this week. Candidate Makes a Pitch for the Pump

The latest pitch from Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alez Lasry would save drivers a couple of cents per-gallon. Lasry yesterday suggested a six-month suspension of the federal gas tax. The federal tax is just over 18 cents-per-gallon, which Lasry says would save people about three dollars per-fill-up. Millions Planned for WI Schools

Wisconsin schools are getting 110-million dollars in federal coronavirus aid.  Governor Tony Evers announced the cash today saying districts can use the money as they see fit.  He is hoping the money will be used quickly and for the most important things first.  The cash averages for around 133 dollars per student.

DA: Prosecutor Didn’t Have PSA For Waukesha Parade Suspect

Milwaukee County prosecutors did not have access to a public safety assessment for the Waukesha Christmas parade suspect.  District Attorney John Chisholm tells county commissioners the PSA hadn’t been uploaded into the file system when Darrell Brooks appeared in court last month.  He was accused of running over a woman and given a thousand dollars bail.  The DA says an inexperienced prosecutor preparing for another trial made the decision.  Brooks is accused of killing five people and injuring dozens more
