Mauston Cites Covid-19 As Reason for Cancellation

City leaders in Mauston cite COVID-19 as the cause for a last minute cancelation of this year’s Christmas parade.  The city’s Facebook page announced the parade cancelation only hours prior to start time yesterday.  The statement also says plans for the Holiday Train Viewing Party on December 18 are also canceled.  The reason cited is from state health data that shows Juneau County to have the highest COVID-19 infection rate in the state.

Evers Vetoes WI Abortion Bills

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is vetoing a series of abortion bills.  The governor issued the five vetoes today saying they would restrict reproductive healthcare access in the state.  Evers says he does not want to turn “back the clock” on reproductive rights.

Another Competency Review For Accused Appleton Cop Stabber

Another competency review is coming for the man accused of stabbing an Appleton cop.  Troy VanGrinsven’s attorney says a psychiatrist determined he can’t stand trial and probably never will.  Outagamie County prosecutors successfully petitioned a judge for a second opinion.  VanGrinsven is charged with attempted homicide after police say he charged and stabbed Sergeant Tyrell West last year.

Land Protected in Sothern Door Co.

Door County Land Trust announced the permanent protection of one mile of stream bank along Stony Creek in southern Door County. This is the first time a conservation organization has purchased land within the 13-mile Stony Creek stream corridor, the largest stream system in southern Door County, for the purpose of permanent conservation. Daily Coronavirus Cases Top 5K in WI

Wisconsin sets a new daily coronavirus case record for this year.  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported nearly 51-hundred new cases Thursday, the most in a single day since late 2020.  Over 14-hundred people are currently in Wisconsin hospitals with coronavirus, also a record-high for this year.  A case of the new omicron variant has been reported in neighboring Minnesota, but still no cases in Wisconsin. Giving Climbs Into Millions for Waukesha

Southeast Wisconsin is showing off its generosity. Organizers with the United for Waukesha Community fund yesterday said they have raised three million-dollars so far. Donations have poured-in from across the area and across the globe, with more than 11 thousand people making a donation. The three million-dollars is just a start, fund managers say that number doesn’t include any of the matching offers that they’ve received.

WI National Guard to Fill in Worker Shortages

The Wisconsin National Guard is being sent to mental health and disability care facilities across the state to plug the state’s worker shortage. The state’s Department of Health Services says about 60 troops have been sent to work as nursing assistants in the Mendota Mental Health Institute, Winnebago Mental Health Institute, Southern Wisconsin Center and Central Wisconsin Center. The troops have completed a 16-hour nursing assistant class, and are working to finish the official 59-hour class to become certified nursing assistants. Guard commanders say this is
