Halderson Asks To Not Be Present At Sentencing

Judge Offers Option: Community Service or Jail Time

A judge has given a Stanley man the option of jail time or community service for having naked pictures of a 17-year-old on his phone. Twenty-year-old Thomas Hager pleaded no contest to misdemeanor sex charges yesterday. Prosecutors dismissed felony child pornography charges as part of his deal. Food Stamp Scam Warning

There is a warning for anyone of food stamps in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said it is “actively investigating” reports about compromised FoodShare cards. The state says anyone enrolled in the program needs to check their balances, check-in with the agency that issues the food stamps, and change passwords and pin numbers. DHS says people also need to report lost or stolen FoodShare cards immediately.

United for Waukesha Community Fund Sends Checks to Victims

The first checks for the victims of the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack are in the mail. The United for Waukesha Community Fund yesterday said it is going to send over six million-dollars to 560 people who were either hurt in the parade, or who saw the attack. WI A.G. Files PFAS Lawsuit

Wisconsin’s Attorney General is suing the maker of firefighting foam in the state for forever chemical pollution. Attorney General Josh Kaul filed the lawsuit yesterday that accuses Johnson Controls and its subsidiary Tyco Fire Controls of lying about pollution at its testing site in Marinette for years. Kaul says the chemicals in the foam have leached into the soil and groundwater. There are no official standards for PFAS chemicals, only advisories from both the state and federal government. WI Coronavirus Cases, Hospitalizations Fall

Wisconsin has crossed another threshold in its fight against the coronavirus. The state’s Hospital Association yesterday said there are now fewer than 300 people hospitalized with the virus across the state. The Hospital Association says just 248 people are in the hospital, including just 53 in the ICU. You have to go back to the end of July of last year to find hospitalization numbers that low.

WI Newspaper Shifts Operations

Milwaukee’s newspaper will now be printed in Illinois. The Journal Sentinel’s parent company, Gannett, yesterday said it is closing its West Milwaukee printing plant and instead will print all of its Wisconsin papers in Peoria, Illinois. In addition to the Journal Sentinel, the move affects the paper in Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, and several other smaller communities. Gannett managers say the printing switch should not impact the content of the paper, or what is delivered online.

Buying a butter burger in Madison will help feed someone in Ukraine. Three Madison Culver’s will donate their profits today to World Central Kitchen, which is helping to feed people impacted by the war in Ukraine. Culver’s owner-operator Susan Bulgrin says she wants to step-up and make sure people fleeing the war at least have the basics. The Culver’s on Todd Drive and Cottage Grove Road in Madison, and the Culver’s in McFarland are all participating.
