Crews On Site for EC Garage Fire

About $30,000 damage was the estimate of an evening garage fire. At 7:45pm Tuesday night a structure fire was report at 2207 9th Street. On fire crews arrival and found a single car detached garage with smoke coming from the doors and windows. Fire crews quickly brought the fire under control. Damage was contained to the garage. Suspect in Detective Shooting Arrested

It took nearly two months to find him, and it took a few hours to get him into custody. Milwaukee Police yesterday said they finally arrested the young man accused of shooting a Milwaukee detective in a botched carjacking in the Third Ward back in January. Police talked 19-year-old Keasean Ellis-Brown out of a home on Milwaukee’s north side yesterday afternoon. Prosecutors have already charged Ellis-Brown with attempted homicide charges. Injured Eagle Soars High Again

The eagle that went viral after being hit by a train is flying once again in western Wisconsin. Rescuers released the eagle yesterday near La Crosse. The eagle became internet-famous when it was hit and pinned by a freight train back in January. The bird suffered just a small fracture and some frostbite, but made a full recovery. Raptor Education Group in Antigo released the eagle yesterday.

Businesses Work on Worker Retention

Businesses in Wisconsin want some state help in getting people to live, and work in the state. The latest edition of the Employer Survey from Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce shows that 80 percent of businesses in Wisconsin want the state to launch a worker recruitment and retention program. WMC’s Kurt Bauer says Wisconsin has faced a worker shortage for years, he’d like to see the state find a way to market Wisconsin as a place to live and work.

WI Coronavirus Vaccines Fall

Fewer people are lining-up to get their coronavirus shots in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services’ latest numbers show that just over 18-thousand vaccine doses were handed-out last week. That’s nearly half the number of doses that were handed-out one month before. Vaccinations in Wisconsin peaked in April of last year at over 430-thousand-doses in one week. They peaked again when the omicron struck in November of last year at over 220-thousand-doses in a week. They have steadily fallen since then.

Xcel Energy Begins Modernization Project at Cedar Falls Hydro

A multi-year project designed to strengthen and modernize the infrastructure at Xcel Energy’s Cedar Falls Hydro plant in Menomonie, Wis. has begun. The spillway modernization project is part of the company’s investment in a cleaner electric system, as it continues its drive toward 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050. Teacher Pledge Program Extended at UW Madison

University of Wisconsin-Madison is extending a program aimed at helping teacher shortages in the state.  The School of Education Wisconsin Teacher Pledge will pay all teaching education students the equivalent of in-state tuition and fees if they teach at a Wisconsin school for four years.  The program began in 2020 and was extended earlier this month through the 2025-2026 school year. A new study shows Wisconsin’s government is one of the least federally dependent in the country.  WalletHub says Wisconsin’s government ranks 40th for government dependency compared to all U.S. states.  Overall Wisconsin is the 32nd-most federally dependent U.S. state.  WalletHub says the most federally dependent state is Alaska and the least is Delaware.

WI Coronavirus Case Count Hits New Low

 Wisconsin is seeing some of its most encouraging coronavirus numbers in nearly a year.  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported just 55 new coronavirus cases yesterday.  That’s the lowest single-day case count since last July.  Wisconsin’s seven-day case average is at just over 340 cases a day.
