Grant Programs Aim to Help Local Recovery

West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (WCWRPC) is administering two grant programs for Eau Claire County. Questions Remain In Brooks Trial

 It remains to be seen just when and where Darrell Brooks Jr.’s trial for the deaths of six people in last year’s Waukesha Christmas Parade will take place. Brooks was in court in Waukesha yesterday. His lawyers once again asked for a delay, and to move the trial. His lawyers continue to say they don’t think he can get a fair trial in Waukesha. Send Off For WI National Guard

Another round of Wisconsin citizen-soldiers are heading-out on deployment. Governor Evers was on hand yesterday to help send-off members of the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 128th Air Control Squadron. The troops are headed for the Middle East for a tour with coalition forces. This is the seventh time the 128th has headed to the Middle East since 2001.

New Report Taps Into WI Drinking Habits

A new report from a state government panel suggests higher prices, higher taxes, and fewer places to buy alcohol as a strategy to fight heavy drinking in Wisconsin.  The report from the State’s Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse says too many people in Wisconsin, both adults and young people drink too much. New Candidate For Sherriff In EC Co.

There is another candidate running for sheriff in Eau Claire County.  Jail Sergeant Kevin Otto jumped into the race as a Democrat yesterday. Otto has worked at the Eau Claire County jail since 1999, he’s been a sergeant since 2010. Otto is the latest to want to replace out-going Sheriff Ron Kramer. Detective Don Henning is running as a Republican.

La Crosse Stage Shift

La Crosse may be getting out of the concert business.  A city panel is looking at the feasibility of privatizing the La Crosse Center. The La Crosse Center has been home to concerts, graduations, and all manners of other events over the years. The current center director is retiring soon, and city leaders say now is the time to see if a private company could step-in and manage it. There’s no word when a decision is expected.

Young Athletes Focus of New Law

Parents of young athletes will soon get a primer on possible heart attacks.  Governor Evers signed a new law yesterday that requires the state’s Department of Public Instruction to work with the WIAA on a warning sheet for parents about the possibility of sudden cardiac arrest. That includes information about EKG’s that can be used to diagnose heart problems in young athletes. Election Managers Look to Reach Voters

Wisconsin’s election managers are reaching-out to thousands of people who may have moved in the state.  The Elections Commission is looking to mail postcards to anyone who has changed their address since the last election. Bond Set in La Crosse Homicide Case

One of the men charged in connection with a La Crosse homicide has his bail set at 500-thousand dollars.  Karvel Freeman of Madison appeared in court this week on first-degree intentional homicide and other charges.  Freeman’s accused of helping Nelson Brown shoot and kill Ernest Knox back in January.  He’ll be back in court next month.
