There is one suspect in custody for the string of shootings that rang-in 2022 in Madison. Police arrested a 39-year-old man who they say was firing a rifle at about 12:45 a.m. New Year’s Day in the 2500 block of Calypso Road, that’s on the city’s west side. There are no other suspects in the two other shootings in the city on New Year’s Eve. There’s no indication that any of the shootings are connected.

Investigators say it looks like something punctured a pressurized container, and that sparked the explosion on Friday that killed two people and sent two others to the hospital in Shawano County. It happened at a garage in the Town of Lessor. The explosion ripped part of the building off, and damaged the building next door. No one is sure just what kind of work was being done just before the explosion.

Kids in Milwaukee Public Schools will be learning from home for at least the next week because of the spike in coronavirus cases. The district yesterday said it plans to have kids learn from home until next Monday. Part of the pause is to allow students and teachers to be tested for the coronavirus before returning to their classrooms. MPS is turning six of its school buildings into testing sites this week.  The path to the Super Bowl once again goes through Lambeau Field. The Packers clinched the top spot in the NFC playoffs with last night’s win over the Minnesota Vikings. Green Bay easily won, 37-10. The win guarantees Green Bay a first round bye, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Faion Hicks won’t be returning to Camp Randall next year. The stand-out cornerback has declared for the NFL draft. Hicks has started nearly every game for Wisconsin during his career. He’s the latest member of the defense to move-on from the school. Hicks has 108 tackles during his time as a Badger.

A WI State Trooper and Burnett County Deputies responded to a one vehicle crash with three occupants on Highway 35 at Godfrey Lake Road. The vehicle was traveling south on Highway 35, failed to negotiate a curve properly and left the roadway. The vehicle was pinned against a tree and fire department and EMS personnel on scene had to remove the driver from the vehicle. Speed was a factor in the crash. The Powerball jackpot is up to 522-million dollars.  Nobody won the 500-million-dollar prize in the Saturday night drawing, so the jackpot rolls over for the Monday drawing.  Lottery officials say the cash option would be worth about 370-million dollars.  Not everyone went away empty-handed Saturday night – three tickets sold in Arizona, Florida and California were worth one-million dollars. 

A Dane County Sheriff’s deputy is expected to make a full recovery after being attacked by a suspect.  On Friday a suspect who had gotten injured during a domestic violence incident was being treated at Meriter ER when he attacked a deputy trying to arrest him.  The deputy was subsequently treated and released from the hospital for facial injuries.  Madison Police and the injured deputy subdued and arrested the suspect who now faces charges of battery to a law enforcement

The New Year’s Day snowfall is predicted to subside overnight to be followed by frigid temperatures today in Madison.  The city snowfall accumulation near five inches in some neighborhoods will be frozen in place at least through Tuesday.  Highs around the region today will top out at ten-degrees. Monday the mercury will reach into the low 20s and by Tuesday into the low 30s.
