Man Arrested in Accidental Shooting

Police are arresting a man after a deadly accidental shooting in north-central Wisconsin.  Police say they were called to the scene of a shooting in Merrill Tuesday morning where a woman was found dead.  Police say a man has been arrested and could be charged with negligent handling of a dangerous weapon.

Barnes Sets Fundraising Record

One of the top Democratic candidates running against U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin continues to break fundraising records.   Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes posted on Twitter this morning he raised a record amount of money in the fourth quarter, nearly one-point-two-five-million dollars.  He first set a Wisconsin U.S. Senate campaign fundraising record in the third quarter.  Barnes is one of about a dozen Democrats who will be trying to unseat Johnson in November.

Bloomer Teen Named Hometown Hero

The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize Bloomer teen Alena Otto as a “Hometown Hero” during its upcoming floor session on January 25 th . The Powder Keg Snowshoe/Fat Bike Race/Ski Race will be held virtually on Saturday, January 22, 2022 through Friday, January 28 and in-person on Saturday, January 29th. Trial Continues in Deadly Chippewa Co. Crash

Today should be the last day of the trial for a Marathon County woman charged in a deadly 2017 Chippewa County crash. Twenty-three-year-old Miranda Jo Miller did not testify in her own defense yesterday. Police say she was looking at her phone when she ran a stop sign in the Town of Colburn back in 2017. She smashed into 46-year-old Jeremy Goodwin’s truck. He died in the crash. She’s facing ten-years in prison if convicted.

Halderson Trial Continues, Prosecutors Close to Resting Case

Prosecutors could be ready to rest their case in Chandler Halderson’s murder trial.  The D.A.’s office is expected to wrap its case today.  Yesterday saw more forensic evidence and testimony from the man who said he gave Halderson the rifle that may have been used to kill Halderson’s parents.  It’s not clear yet just what kind of case Halderson’s lawyers are planning, including whether he will take the stand in his own defense.

WI Coronavirus Cases On Downslide

Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalization numbers continue their slow decline. The state’s Hospital Association yesterday said there continues to be more than 22 hundred people in the hospital with the virus, but the numbers are down from last week. Wisconsin’s ICU numbers are also down a bit. WI Bail System in Spotlight as MKE Officer Recovers

Wisconsin’s bail system is once again in the spotlight at the State Capitol. A pair of Republican lawmakers yesterday said last week’s shooting of an off-duty Milwaukee police officer continues to show the need for higher bail in the state. Fire Under Investigation

Investigators in Kenosha are searching for the cause of a deadly apartment fire there.  Three people died in the fire late Monday night.  It took firefighters a half-hour just to get the flames under control.  Firefighters say it looks like two of the victims died from a “medical event” before the fire started.  No one is saying how the third victim died.  A Kenosha police officer was treated for smoke inhalation, but is now recovering at home.
