Marshfield Police and Fire responded to a report of a vehicle on fire. Police arrived first and found a 2003 Chevy Silverado fully engulfed in flames. The owner, Rorey Genett, had left the vehicle unattended for approximately 10 minutes while it was warming up. Halderson to Be Sentenced in March

Chandler Halderson will begin his likely life sentence in March.  A judge in Madison yesterday set Halderson’s sentencing hearing for March 17th.  A jury last week convicted Halderson of murdering, then butchering his parents back in the summer of 2021.  They say he killed them because they found out he was lying about school and work.  Halderson is looking at an almost certain life sentence, the question remains however, as to whether the judge will allow him to be eligible

Families Hold Vigil for Those Killed

The families of the six people murdered in Milwaukee over the weekend don’t have any answers either.  Family members gathered for a vigil yesterday near the home on Milwaukee’s north side where the six were found on Sunday.  Police say they were shot. Hector Ferguson is a nephew of two of the victims, he says his uncles were good men, and said the murders have left him feeling empty.  Milwaukee Police are not saying anything about suspects or a motive

Grant Could Mean New Hires for ECFD

Eau Claire’s fire department is hoping to use a federal grant to hire more firefighters.  The city council last night okayed an application for a SAFER grant from the Department of Homeland Security.  If Eau Claire wins the grant, the city could hire six new firefighters for the station on Golf Road.  Deputy Fire Chief Allyn Bertrang says Eau Claire needs to add firefighters because the city’s south side is growing.  The fire department hopes to submit its grant application

Lawmakers Tackle Natural Immunity Exemptions

The plan to allow people in Wisconsin’s who’ve already had the coronavirus to avoid vaccine or testing mandates is almost certainly doomed.  The State Assembly yesterday approved a plan that would require any vaccine mandate in the state to include religious and natural immunity exemptions.  There are no plans for a state-based vaccine mandate, but some lawmakers say they still fear a federal mandate.  The governor is expected to veto the plan if it reaches his desk.

Tough-On-Crime Package Passes State Assembly

Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol have taken the first step toward their tough-on-crime package.  The State Assembly yesterday approved a series of plans that would support law enforcement and create new punishments.  One of those plans would require at least 30 days in jail for anyone who knowingly attends a riot that ends with damage.  Anyone who participates in the riot would be looking at 45 days in jail.  State representatives passed a second plan yesterday that would require three-and-a-half years in

Some Look to Shift Classes Online

Some students and teaching assistants at UW-Madison want more online classes because of the coronavirus.  Yesterday was the first day of classes for students, and the Teaching Assistant Association and the Association of Students in Madison both want classes moved online.  The two groups signed a letter to the university asking for more hybrid learning opportunities.  The two say they are worried about catching the coronavirus.  The university said there are already plenty of opportunities for students to take classes

WI Represented on World Stage

It’s now Olypmian Anna Hoffmann.  The Madison native won a spot on Team USA’s women’s ski jumping team this year.  Hoffmann was added to the list after another country couldn’t find enough jumpers.  Hoffmann started her ski jumping career at age two in the Blackhawk Ski Club in Middleton.  She will compete on February 5th in the individual normal hill competition.

CRT Hits Governors Desk

Wisconsin’s ban on teaching certain racial issues is on its way to Governor Tony Evers’ desk.  The Wisconsin Senate approved the plan yesterday.  Republican lawmakers say they have no problem with teaching about America’s racial history, they just don’t want to teach racism.  Democrats and a number of education advocates say Republicans are simply afraid of Critical Race Theory.  The governor is expected to veto the plan.
