February can be one of the coldest and snowiest months of winter. HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals remind everyone the risk of cold-related injuries increases as the temps drop. The most common cold-related health issues are hypothermia and frostbite. Tyler Bowe, HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals’ registered nurse and trauma coordinator says while many people can and should stay indoors when the temperature drops to dangerous levels, some jobs require people to work in the cold.

Six More Weeks…Or Not? Pick a Groundhog!

 Punxsutawney Phil has made his annual appearance in western Pennsylvania on this Groundhog Day.  He emerged from his burrow this morning in Gobbler’s Knob and spotted his shadow.  According to tradition, that means winter will stick around for six more weeks.  The February 2nd tradition marks the 136th year that Phil has predicted whether we’ll have an early spring or six additional weeks of cold and snow. Questions Remain in WI Murder Case

We still don’t have a motive.  Prosecutors in Milwaukee opened-up some of the files in the investigation into last October’s murder of three-year-old Major Harris and his mother, Mallery Muenzenberger.  She’s the Onalaska mom found shot in a Milwaukee backyard.  The files give some more insight into the search for her killer, his suicide, and ultimately the search for the little boy’s body.  The files do not offer any details as to why they were killed.  Investigators say the suspect

Two Suspects in Custody After Shooting Near MN School

Two suspects are under arrest after a shooting outside a Richfield school that killed one student and injured another.  The shooting happened midday yesterday on the sidewalk outside alternative school South Education Center.  The victims were taken to the hospital, where 15-year-old Jahmari Rice was declared dead.  The other student remains in critical condition.  Police haven’t identified the suspects.  Governor Tim Walz thanked police and school officials last night for their response and said more needs to be done to

WI School Changes Ticket Policy After Deadly Shooting

School leaders in Beloit are changing their high school ticket policy following last weekend’s deadly shooting outside of Memorial High School.  The school district yesterday said players will now have three tickets to give away to family members, and all students will need to sign-up for tickets before school ends each day as a way to control their crowds.  The change essentially means people cannot walk-up and buy tickets at the school.  There will also be more police officers at

Teen Sentenced to 40 Years

The young man convicted of shooting and killing another teenager at the Fox Valley Mall is heading to prison for four decades.  A judge yesterday sentenced 18-year-old Dezman Ellis to 40 years in prison for last February’s shooting.  Investigators say Ellis shot Jovanni Frausto because of a fight over Ellis’ girlfriend.  The shooting touched-off a statewide manhunt for Ellis who was eventually found in Iowa.  Ellis apologized in court before his sentencing.

Parents Seek Private School Options

It’s a sign of just how many parents in Wisconsin are looking for a change. Trial Continues in MN for Ex-Officers

Testimony is continuing in the federal civil rights trial of three ex-Minneapolis police officers.  The Hennepin County chief medical examiner faced cross examination by the defense yesterday, saying his office became the target of protests in the days after autopsy results for George Floyd were released in 2020, despite the non-political nature of the office.  Doctor Andrew Baker testified that Floyd died when his heart and lungs stopped working because of the restraint by law enforcement.  The three on trial

Big Surprise for the Big Game

A wounded Milwaukee officer is on his way to the Super Bowl.  A Milwaukee radio group (WTMJ) yesterday surprised officer Herbert Davis with a trip to the Super Bowl in Los Angeles.  Davis was shot in the line of duty last week, and left the hospital wearing his Bengals gear.  Davis is a life-long Bengals fan.  He got even more attention after his family released a video of him crying tears of joy after the Bengals punched their ticket to

Winter Project Aims to Improve Summer Conditions

The hope is that this winter’s construction will open-up Lake Altoona come this summer.  Crews have started building a sand trap in the Eau Claire River.  The idea is to dig a massive hole in the river, which will then collect the sand that currently ends-up in the lake.  The hope is to clean the sand trap every year, and keep as much sand as possible out of the lake.
