Coronavirus Cases Continue Low

You have to go back to last August to find coronavirus hospitalization numbers this low. The Wisconsin Hospital Association yesterday said the state’s hospitalization fell to 842 people. The last time numbers were that low was on August 28th of last year. The Hospital Association says 165 people are in ICUs with the virus across the state.

Returning to the Dance Floor

Another tradition is returning after the coronavirus. UW-Eau Claire yesterday said the Viennese Ball will be back this year. Last year’s ball was a virtual event because of the coronavirus. There will be a mask mandate and a requirement for a negative coronavirus test for anyone who wants to attend this year’s ball. Tickets are on sale now.

Gov. Evers Final State of the State Planned

Governor Tony Evers’ final State of the State Address for his current term is tonight.  This will be Evers’ first in-person State of the State Address since 2020 after last year’s was held online due to the pandemic.  He plans to talk about his accomplishments as governor, including  the over three-point-eight-million dollars in Wisconsin’s general fund.  The speech is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Fill Up Costs Continue to Go Up

Gas prices continue to go up in Wisconsin this week.  According to Triple-A, the average price for regular unleaded in Wisconsin is three dollars and 27 cents a gallon, up three cents from this time last week.  That’s also 23 cents more expensive than this time last month.  Eau Claire has some of the highest gas prices in the state at an average of three-42 a gallon, nearly 30 cents higher than last month.

Inmate Death Under Investigation

A man who recently died at the Door County Jail is identified.  The Door County Sheriff’s Office says Michael Savage of Sturgeon Bay died in custody last Friday.   The sheriff’s office says toxicology results are pending and Savage’s cause of death hasn’t been determined.

Review Of Officer Involved Death Released

The review of an incident dating back to December has been completed and the following was released by the ECPD: On Wednesday November 3, 2021 the Eau Claire Police Department was involved in the fatal shootingof a man who had stabbed a woman and was armed with a knife inside a residence on the west side of Eau Claire. Dancing Grannies Plan St. Patrick’s Day Parade Appearance in MKE

 Saturday, March 12th at noon. That’s when Milwaukee’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade returned. The Shamrock Club of Wisconsin yesterday announced that the parade will be back this year following a two-year of coronavirus hiatus. The parade will wind its way through downtown. The Shamrock Club says in addition to the usual bands and festivities, the Dancing Grannies will make an appearance at the parade as well.

Election Day in WI: Local Primaries Decided Today

Today is Election Day in Wisconsin. Voters will decide local races for school board, mayor, town and city council, and judges. The winners of today’s primaries will move on to the election in April. The polls are open from 7 a.m. til 8 p.m., and all voters must bring an ID with them to the polls.

Familiar Name Will Not Seek Reelection

Eau Claire County will soon have a new sheriff for the first time in 26 years. Sheriff Ron Cramer yesterday said he will not run for re-election this fall. Cramer said it is time for him to ride off into the sunset. There’s no word who may step-up and run to replace him. Cramer has served in the sheriff’s office since 1975, and has been sheriff since 1996. His last day will be in January of next year.

Toycen Family Swings for Fences

The Toycen family is getting into the baseball business. Craig Toycen and his family yesterday said they’ve bought the Eau Claire Express. The Toycen family is known for Toycen Ford in Chippewa Falls. Toycen says nothing will change on the field, but said he’s looking to make the games at Carson Park much more enjoyable for fans and families. The Express are supposed to open their season on May 30th.
