More schools are dropping their mask mandates in Wisconsin.  La Crosse Schools became the latest to tell kids they can leave the masks at home.  Superintendent Aaron Engel sent a note home to parents yesterday saying the school’s mask requirement will end in two weeks.  The superintendent says a number of factors drove the decision, including the rapid drop in both coronavirus cases and coronavirus hospitalizations.

 It could be another two months before the Republican field for governor in Wisconsin is set.  Former Governor Tommy Thompson yesterday said he will decide in April if he’s going to get into this year’s race.  Thompson will end his time as UW System President next month.  He says he will make a decision after that.  Wisconsin’s Republican field is crowded with Rebecca Kleefisch, Kevin Nicholson, and state Rep. Republicans are, reportedly, in love with Milwaukee.  A new report in Politico says the city is the “frontrunner” for the Republican National Convention in 2024.  Former RNC chairman Reince Preibus yesterday said the RNC delegation was blown away by the city’s plans to host a convention.  Milwaukee has a leg-up, the city was supposed to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention before the coronavirus canceled it.  Milwaukee’s delegation says the plan for Republicans would essentially be the same as it

The doomed plan from Wisconsin Republicans to get people back to work took its first step forward at the Capitol.  The Wisconsin Assembly yesterday approved new rules for people receiving unemployment and Medicaid benefits.  People will have to look for work, actually go on interviews, and accept jobs that they’re offered in order to qualify for benefits.  Republican lawmakers say the idea is not to punish people, but to get them back into the workforce.  Governor Tony Evers is expected to kill the plan

Eau Claire’s public health boss says at-home testing has nothing to do with the drop in coronavirus cases.  Audrey Boerner with the Eau Claire City-County Health Department said the drop in positive cases is part of an international trend with the omicron variant.  She says the arrival of at-home tests did not lead to a drop in reported cases.  Wisconsin saw a massive spike in coronavirus cases that peaked last month, and has since seen its coronavirus numbers fall back to where

 An East Troy man hit it big on a scratcher.  The Wisconsin Lottery says Kenneth Spaight got the grand prize in the Marvelous Millions instant scratch game.  There are just three one million-dollars scratchers in the entire game.  Spaight bought the lucky 30 dollar ticket at the Cornerstone Filling Station in Eagle.

President Biden is announcing one-billion dollars in funding to help clean up the Great Lakes.  The White House says most of that money from the bipartisan infrastructure bill will be used to restore areas of concern that’ve been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency.  Some of those areas include Wisconsin.  The problems are expected to be fixed by 2030.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is refunding people who applied for wolf hunting permits.  This comes after wolves were recently put back on the Federal Endangered Species List.  The DNR says the ruling means Wisconsin doesn’t have the authority to hold a wolf hunting season.  Ten dollar refund checks will be sent through the mail within the next four to six weeks. Madison police are investigating several shootings.  Police say the shootings happened between 8:40 last night and around 12:30 this morning.  Police say at least two cars were damaged during the shootings but no one is hurt.  No arrests have been made.
