WI Stimulus Money Offers Help to Homeowners

Wisconsin’s governor is continuing his statewide tour to spread the state’s coronavirus stimulus money. Governor Evers was in Menomonie yesterday to talk about 92 million-dollars available as part of the Wisconsin Help for Homeowners program. That program gives qualifying homeowners up to 40 thousand-dollars in assistance to pay for late mortgage payments or overdue bills. Steady Decline Continues

There are now fewer than 400 people in the hospital with the coronavirus in Wisconsin. The state’s Hospital Association yesterday said 366 people are in the hospital with the virus across the state. WI Strip Search Laws Under Review

The laws regarding searching students could be changing after the almost-strip search of a handful of teenage girls in Oconto County. A number of northeast Wisconsin lawmakers yesterday said the current law isn’t clear enough. This all comes after the superintendent in Suring Schools told five students to strip down to their underwear as part of a vape-cartridge search. Search Continues for Missing UW-La Crosse Student

There’s now a reward for information that helps the family of a missing UW-La Crosse student find him. Hamud Faal’s family is offering 15 thousand-dollars to anyone who can help find Faal. He’s been missing for about three weeks. La Crosse Police say he was last seen early Sunday, February 20th after leaving a bar by himself. No one has heard from him since. Cleanup Continues in Stoughton After Tornado

The focus is now cleaning-up in Stoughton. The city’s mayor declared a state of emergency yesterday. That will help Stoughton qualify for any available state or federal help to clean-up after Saturday’s tornado. As for homeowners, the city is hosting several brush clean-up opportunities, including opening the city’s yard waste site through the weekend.

WI Treasurer Looks at Pulling Russian Investments

Wisconsin’s state treasurer is the latest to look to pull the plug on any Russian investments. Treasurer Sarah Godlewski yesterday asked the State of Wisconsin Investment Board to see what investments the state has in any Russian companies or funds, and make a plan to dump them. Godlewski says Wisconsin should not be in business with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. Several other states and private companies have already called for the same kind of thing.

No Charges File in Milwaukee Election Fraud Probe

Milwaukee County’s D.A.’s office isn’t saying there’s no evidence of voter fraud from the 2020 election, instead prosecutors are saying there is no evidence that several voters in nursing homes were sent ballots without requesting one.  Prosecutors yesterday said they will not be filing charges against state Elections Commissioners Ann Jacobs and Mark Thomsen.  The D.A.’s office said in a statement that “there has been no evidence submitted that any of the individuals who received ballots did not request them.”

Man Accused Of Green Bay Murder Pleads Not Guilty

A man accused of killing another man and burning his body near University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is pleading not guilty.  Pedro Santiago-Marquez pleaded not guilty this morning to first-degree intentional homicide and being involved in mutilating a corpse.  He demanded a speedy trial and had his trial set for April 18th.  Santiago-Marquez is accused of killing Jason Mendez-Ramos over a drug debt back in September.  Two other men are also facing charges in connection with the crime.

Two Men Recovering From Madison Drive-By Shooting

Two men are recovering after a drive-by shooting in west Madison.  Police say the men were shot outside a business near Odana Road and Grand Canyon Drive early Sunday morning.  The victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  So far no arrests have been made.

AG Kaul Announces Environmental Judgment, Penalty For WI Company

Attorney General Josh Kaul announced today that his office has obtained a civil judgment against Wisconsin Veneer and Plywood, Inc. (Wisconsin Veneer) requiring it to pay a $75,000 monetary penalty for alleged violations of the State’s air pollution control laws that occurred at Wisconsin Veneer’s Shawano County manufacturing facility. According to the Complaint, the facility uses a wood fired boiler that combusts scrap veneer, sawdust, wood chips, and wood bark. Uncontrolled emissions from the boiler are vented to the atmosphere
