WI Coronavirus Vaccines Fall

Fewer people are lining-up to get their coronavirus shots in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services’ latest numbers show that just over 18-thousand vaccine doses were handed-out last week. That’s nearly half the number of doses that were handed-out one month before. Vaccinations in Wisconsin peaked in April of last year at over 430-thousand-doses in one week. They peaked again when the omicron struck in November of last year at over 220-thousand-doses in a week. They have steadily fallen since then.

Xcel Energy Begins Modernization Project at Cedar Falls Hydro

A multi-year project designed to strengthen and modernize the infrastructure at Xcel Energy’s Cedar Falls Hydro plant in Menomonie, Wis. has begun. The spillway modernization project is part of the company’s investment in a cleaner electric system, as it continues its drive toward 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050. Teacher Pledge Program Extended at UW Madison

University of Wisconsin-Madison is extending a program aimed at helping teacher shortages in the state.  The School of Education Wisconsin Teacher Pledge will pay all teaching education students the equivalent of in-state tuition and fees if they teach at a Wisconsin school for four years.  The program began in 2020 and was extended earlier this month through the 2025-2026 school year. A new study shows Wisconsin’s government is one of the least federally dependent in the country.  WalletHub says Wisconsin’s government ranks 40th for government dependency compared to all U.S. states.  Overall Wisconsin is the 32nd-most federally dependent U.S. state.  WalletHub says the most federally dependent state is Alaska and the least is Delaware.

WI Coronavirus Case Count Hits New Low

 Wisconsin is seeing some of its most encouraging coronavirus numbers in nearly a year.  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported just 55 new coronavirus cases yesterday.  That’s the lowest single-day case count since last July.  Wisconsin’s seven-day case average is at just over 340 cases a day.

 The Children’s Museum’s latest play space is now open, in Menomonie. The museum opened its play space yesterday. The new spot in Menomonie can accommodate up to 40 people. Halderson Asks To Not Be Present At Sentencing

There is no way Chandler Halderson is going to avoid a life sentence, but he may avoid the sentencing hearing. Halderson’s lawyers say he’s asked the judge not to be in the courtroom when he’s sentenced on Thursday for murdering then butchering his parents. Judge Offers Option: Community Service or Jail Time

A judge has given a Stanley man the option of jail time or community service for having naked pictures of a 17-year-old on his phone. Twenty-year-old Thomas Hager pleaded no contest to misdemeanor sex charges yesterday. Prosecutors dismissed felony child pornography charges as part of his deal. Food Stamp Scam Warning

There is a warning for anyone of food stamps in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said it is “actively investigating” reports about compromised FoodShare cards. The state says anyone enrolled in the program needs to check their balances, check-in with the agency that issues the food stamps, and change passwords and pin numbers. DHS says people also need to report lost or stolen FoodShare cards immediately.
