There is another lawsuit involving a former Wauwatosa police officer for one of his officer-involved shootings. The family of Alvin Cole yesterday filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against officer Joseph Mensah for shooting and killing Cole in February of 2020. Students who test positive for the coronavirus at UW-Madison this year will be able to stay in their dorm rooms. The school yesterday said it is changing its quarantine policy for the upcoming school year. Last year the university moved positive students to special quarantine dorms, but that proved difficult because of the large number of positive students and the small number of quarantine rooms. There is more to that suspicious fire in Chippewa Falls. Police yesterday announced the arrest of 58-year-old Scott Vaningan for Wednesday’s fire at a home just north of downtown Chippewa Falls. Police are not identifying the victim in the case, or saying how they died. Police do say Vannigan knew the victim. Firefighters called the fire suspicious from the get-go. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

The man who admitted to killing his sister and her husband in Fall Creek back in 2017 wants a new plea deal. Wayne Price on Wednesday asked an Eau Claire County judge for a chance to change his guilty plea. He’s serving nearly a 30 year sentence in the case. Price says his lawyers didn’t do their job, and didn’t fully inform him of his options in his first trial.

The Cobban Bridge is closed as crews get ready to tear it down. The Department of Transportation closed the bridge in Jim Falls this week. Crews will tear it down and eventually replace it with a new bridge. The demotion work is set to begin in two weeks, though it will be another year before the new bridge will be open.

There’s a request for Wisconsin lawmakers to clarify the state’s open records law. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty yesterday sent a proposal to lawmakers that would update the rules for releasing government information following a recent state Supreme Court decision. That decision said governments don’t have to pay attorneys fees in open records cases until a judge rules against them. Advocates say that gives governments a window to drag-out open records cases and hide behind expensive trials, then hand over the information

Wisconsin’s election managers are warning clerks to look out for people trying to request other people’s ballots. The Wisconsin Elections Commission held an emergency meeting yesterday after a Racine County man admitted to applying for ballots that weren’t his own. Elections Commission member Ann Jacobs said that’s voter fraud. The Commission yesterday said election clerks in other cities and counties need to look out for similar stunts. One Nashville city councilman is making a last ditch plea to get the Republican National Convention for his city. The RNC’s site selection committee has already recommended Milwaukee and the full RNC is set to vote next week, but Nashville councilman Robert Swope is calling his city’s convention proposal for a vote. It may not pass. Local Democrats in Nashville have made it clear they don’t want the convention in their city. The final RNC vote is set for next

The Wisconsin Assembly is being forced to pay attorney fees for a liberal watchdog group suing over the Michael Gableman investigation.  Today a Dane County judge ruled the Assembly will pay American Oversight at least 98-thousand dollars using tax payer dollars.  American Oversight has sued Gableman, claiming he broke Wisconsin open records laws while investigating the 2020 election.
