There will be more options for kids in Eau Claire looking to enjoy some time outside this summer. The city is close to finishing work on new playgrounds at Newell Park and McDonough Park. The new playground and skate park over at Boyd Park should be ready by the end of the summer. Work there is not as far along as at the other parks.

Mother’s Day is here! As far as what mom wants? The top most desired gifts are a nap, chores, and a meal planned by someone else. In 18 states, especially mid-west states, an afternoon snooze ranks as the number one desired gift.  In California, moms most want you to do the chores. ‘Time2play.com’ surveyed moms across the country, and it turns out they don’t want a vacuum, they want someone to vacuum. Also positive go-to’s; spa treatments, flowers, or a thoughtful card.

Governor Tony Evers’ list of pardons is growing. On Friday, the Governor announced 49-pardons.  The Governor’s press release yesterday says the list now stands at a total of four-hundred-98 pardons spanning Ever’s three years in office so far.  Evers said he’s “grateful for being able to give a second chance” to those who are “working to move beyond their past mistakes.”  The full list of the beneficiaries of Friday’s pardons is available in the newsroom press releases at Evers-dot-WI-dot-Gov.

 The fastest two minutes in sports is near. Get your fancy hat and mint julep ready! It’s Derby day. The horse Zandon is the top draw for the Kentucky Derby. The horse Epicenter is in the number two spot.  Other horses to watch for include Taiba, Mo Donegal, White Abarrio and Messier.  There are expected to be 20 horses in the field for today’s Fastest Two Minutes in Sports.  The Gates are open at Churchill Downs in preparation for the Kentucky Derby today.

Brat Fest organizers say volunteers are needed to help out during this year’s festival.  The volunteers will work the vendor booths, cook and serve food, work cash registers, drive shuttles, keep the grounds clean and much more.  Volunteers with approved non-profit event partners are welcome.  The 40th Annual BratFest comes up Memorial Day weekend May 27, 28 and 29 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.  Details on how to volunteer are online WITH A CLICK HERE.

There will be an increased risk for wildfires across Wisconsin this weekend.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the fire risk in southern Wisconsin is currently high and in parts of central and northern Wisconsin it’s very high.  Fire risk updates are available on the Department of Natural Resources’ website.

Four people died during a house fire in western Wisconsin.  The fire broke out at a home on Backtrail Road in Little Falls around nine o’clock last night.  The fire department says the fire was put out quickly once firefighters arrived but four people had become trapped inside and couldn’t escape.  A father and his child did make it out of the house safely.  The cause of the fire is unknown.

Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in our community and surrounding communities. According to the CDC’s Community Risk Level metrics, several counties in the Western Region have moved to a Medium Risk Level.
