WI DOJ Investigates Officer Involved Shooting

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating an officer involved shooting in Adams County.  Authorities say an Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy responded Wednesday to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Ember Avenue in the Town of New Chester.  The deputy ended up shooting a person who was armed with a knife.  The offender was sent to the hospital in stable condition.

Medical Condition Could Have Caused Crashes

The Milwaukee Medical Examiner’s office has released the name of the third person killed in Tuesday’s fiery crash on Mayfair Road. Authorities confirmed 64-year-old Denise Durrah, who worked for the city’s Public Works Department, was driving the city truck that caused the crash.  Family members said on social media she had a medical condition that may have led to the crash.  The two other victims were previously identified as 85-year-old Paul Woida and 40-year-old Amy Miller.

Warming Shelters Open, Hydrant Reminder

The Eau Claire Fire Department is urging people to keep fire hydrants on their property clear of snow. Deputy Fire Chief Allyn Bertrang says that will help save critical minutes when they are responding to a fire. A few feet on all sides of the hydrants should be cleared. Meanwhile, if the temps are hitting hard or you are dealing with power outages, warming shelters are open in Eau Claire County. People without power can warm up and get electronics

Madison Mayor In New Role

 Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is getting a new title.  She was named the new chair of Climate Mayors.  The group is a network of United States mayors who work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  In her new role, Rhodes-Conway will help catalyze urgent action at the local scale to promote climate solutions and support greener, safer and more resilient cities across the country.

Authorities Look For Suspect in Campus Vandalism

 Authorities are searching for the individual responsible for vandalizing property at the University of Wisconsin campus.  UW and Madison police say the suspect spray-painted graffiti in several areas last week.  The paint was found at the UW Hillel Foundation building, the office of an organization that supports Jewish students.  Investigators do not currently believe that building was specifically targeted, but say the investigation is ongoing.

WI Rep. Removed From Elections Committee

Representative Janel Brandtjen is no longer serving on the State Assembly’s elections committee.  Speaker Robin Vos has removed her from the panel that she previously chaired.  The Menomonee Falls Republican has often been at odds with Vos, including over the 2020 election investigation that conflicted with the Vos-endorsed probe by former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman.  Brandtjen was dismissed from the Republican caucus last month.

 Snow totals are coming in and the amounts get higher the further north in Wisconsin.  The National Weather Service says Madison is seeing anywhere from three to over five inches of snow.  In far northern Wisconsin some places are reporting nearly two feet of snow.

Madison Gets Salty

Madison is adjusting a city ordinance that limits the amount of salt that can be put on sidewalks to melt ice and snow.  The city says accumulating salt must now be removed from sidewalks.  Property owners that don’t remove their salt could be fined the same way they could be fined for not removing snow.  The first offense is a 124 dollar fine and the second offense is 187 dollars.

WOW, Wausau!

A city in central Wisconsin is one of the fastest growing in the nation.  The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey says Wausau is the eighth-fastest growing metro over the last five years.  The Census Bureau says the Wausau metro has grown 22-point-six percent during that time.  The only other Midwest city in the top 20 is Ames, Iowa at fifth.  The Census Bureau says the fastest growing metro in the country is Jackson, Tennessee.
