Heavy Rain Leads to Rising Levels on Chippewa River, Trail Closures

Heavy rain in the upper Chippewa River watershed is resulting in rising levels on the Chippewa River in
Eau Claire.

At 710 a.m., the Chippewa River gauge at Grand Avenue read approximately 7675 feet; at its current level, the river has entered the Action stage. The downtown flood stage is 773 feet. At its current level, the river has entered the Action stage, prompting the City to close the following areas for the safety of residents and visitors.

  • Chippewa River Trail – behind UW-Eau Claire Fine Arts building
    Other areas that may see immediate closures should river levels continue to increase beyond current
    projections:
    -Madison Street Bridge trail underpass – east side
  • Chippewa River Trail – behind Hobbs Ice Arena, including boat landing and parking area

The City of Eau Claire will continue to monitor the river closely and will take additional steps as
necessary for safety.
