The following was released from Sheriff Hakes after an inspection of their facility:

On December 14 th 2023 in accordance with Wisconsin State Statute 301.37(3) the inspection consisted of a tour of the facility to asses the safety, sanitation, adequacy, and fitness of the facility; dialogue with the staff and inmates; and review of facility records and documentation. There were no violations noted during this year’s inspection.
The inspector (Brad Hoover) went onto say, “My observations during the inspection revealed cordial and professional interactions between the staff and persons in custody.” Furthermore, “I would like to thank Captain Modl and your staff for their cooperation during this inspection process.”
The Chippewa County Jail has now went 6 years in a row without a violation. I attribute this as a direct result of the staff and management of the Jail. I am proud of the Jail staff we have from our Chief Deputy Curt Dutton (who was our former Jail Administrator), Jail Capitan Daniel Modl, Jail Lieutenant James Maki, our Jail Sgts, and Deputies.
In a time when corrections departments across the State of Wisconsin are having difficulties with filling staffing vacancies; it is humbling to know our County has been infraction free for 6 years in a row and it is directly related to our staff.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sheriff Travis C. Hakes
