Ruling Keeps Original Name on Legal Documents For Registered Sex Offender

A Wisconsin transgender woman is not being allowed to change her name because she’s a registered sex offender.

The Supreme Court ruled today the woman can still use her preferred name of “Ella” but has to keep her birth name on all legal documents.  Dissenting judges say her First Amendment rights are being violated by not allowing the name change.  The 22-year-old was ordered to register as sex offender due to the 2016 sexual assault of an autistic teen boy.
