In 1881, the American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton.
In 1927, Charles Lindbergh arrived in Paris, France, in his plane “The Spirit of St. Louis.” It marked the first time a person had flown across the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean when her plane landed in Ireland. She had taken off from Newfoundland a day earlier.
In 1980, “The Empire Strikes Back” opened in movie theaters across the U.S.
In 1991, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber during national elections.
In 1992, the reality series “The Real World” made its debut on MTV. The show turned MTV cameras loose on seven young people from different backgrounds as they lived together in a house over the course of several months. The first season of “The Real World” took place in New York City.
In 1996, cowboy actor Lash LaRue died at the age of 78.
In 1998, a gunman opened fire inside Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon. Two students were killed and several others wounded. The suspected gunman, a student named Kip Kinkel, was also accused of killing his parents a day earlier.
In 1999, after 18 winless nominations, soap opera star Susan Lucci finally won her first Daytime Emmy Award as Best Soap Actress for her longtime role as Erica Kane on ABC’s “All My Children.”
In 2002, former “Our Gang Comedy” cast member Joe Frank Cobb died at the age of 84. Cobb played Fat Joe in the “Our Gang” series.
In 2017, Drake stole the show at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, breaking Adele’s record for most award wins in a single night.
In 2018, Gina Haspel was sworn in as the first female to head the Central Intelligence Agency.
In 2019, human composting became legal in Washington state.
