New Report Questions Rental Assistance Programs

There are questions about just how closely Wisconsin watched 96 million dollars for rental and energy assistance.

A new report from the Legislative Audit Bureau shows a lack of consistency, and possibly people who were given money that they didn’t qualify for. Wisconsin spent 64 million-dollars on rental assistance from March through September of last year, and spent another 32 million on energy assistance. The audit says about a third of people who asked for rental assistance didn’t provide any proof-of-income, and some didn’t provide leases or rental agreements. Auditors say they couldn’t come to any conclusions about the energy assistance program because the Evers Administration cherry picked the cases they were allowed to look at.

Lawmakers yesterday said the audit shows the need for more oversight for the millions of dollars that the governor has been able to spend.
